Everything you ever wanted to know about satin cord

Rayon versus Nylon Satin Cord - What's the difference?

Rayon Satin Cord is a high-quality cord with a shiny look and soft satin feel. Great for necklaces, knotting and bridal wear. It comes in 50+ colors and 3 sizes:

Petite #0 - approximately 1mm - 1.4mm
Lightweight #1 - approximately 1.5mm - 1.9mm
Heavyweight #2 - approximately 2mm or slightly over

Size is approximate and can vary slightly from roll to roll.

If you need to seal the ends, use a drop of Fraycheck.

Nylon Satin Cord is durable cord with a nice bulk. It is great for necklaces and knotting projects.

It comes in 40+ colors in 2mm size and a few colors in hard-to-find 1mm, 3mm and 4mm sizes.

Size is approximate and can vary slightly from roll to roll.

Nylon cord can be melted to seal the end by wisping it through a flame.

Which one is really satin?

They both are. Satin is not a specific fabric type, but rather the way a fabric is woven to produce a shiny side and a dull side. The original satin fabric was made of silk, but satin is now made from a number of different threads.

Which one is really rattail?

The rayon cord is the real rattail, which is a registered trademark of the manufacturer.

Kumihimo - What is it, and which satin cord do I use?

Info, Tips, Tutorials!

Kumihimo - what is it?

Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique which produces ornamental braids in a variety of shapes and sizes.

How do you pronounce it?

Koomi - heemo

Kumi is Japanese for 'braid' and Himo means 'string'.

Which type of satin cord is best for Kumihimo?

The rayon and nylon satin cord both work fine! The rayon petite size cord and the nylon 1mm cords will give you a braid around the size of a pencil. The rayon lightweight size makes a braid that is slightly larger than that. The rayon heavyweight and the nylon 2mm both make a braid that is roughly the size of your little finger.

Kumi-whoomi????

Great gift for kumihimo enthusiasts!

Whenever we get a phone call from someone saying. "I want some information on something but I don't know how to pronounce it", we immediately say "Kumihimo!". (They're usually surprised that we know what they're going to say, but we reassure everyone that they're not the only one struggling with the pronunciation).

Chinese Knotting and Celtic Knotting

Lots of great info about ornamental knots!

What are Chinese, Celtic and Ornamental Knotting?

These are all techniques for creating decorative knots that can be used with jewelry, bridalwear and other garments, accessories, and many other places!

Which satin cord is best for Chinese, Celtic or other Ornamental Knotting?

The rayon heavyweight and the nylon 2mm are both good for Chinese knotting. Using a smaller size will produce knots that are pretty small - sometimes too small to see the knot detail. Nylon cord is a little more forgiving if you are just starting out and may be tying and untying the same knot several times.

I'm really glad I stumbled on this, I have been making jewelery for almost a year now. I used to do alot of macrame, and now am begining to use knots and beads which is more satisfying, with a bit of wire work as well. Love this page,

thanks!
