What Would I Save?

The fact of the matter is, I may not be able to save a blessed thing if my house burned down.

I do not even like to think these thoughts but as I mention in the story I am about to tell, I had a close call recently, even before I knew about the topic of this lens.

So yes, my violin is what I would save. I'll tell you the story about my violin, too. She is a beautiful instrument and is pictured here, in the original violin case I received when I got her, over fifty years ago.

She's been a great companion over the years.

A Gut Feeling

I met my husband for coffee after working a three day, 32 hour stretch after a busy weekend at the Hospital. We always meet on a Monday morning and catch up with our friends, some of whom I have known over 30 years.

We talk Single Payer Healthcare reform, laugh at everyone's weekend adventures and eat vegetarian food.

Last Monday, I was not feeling in the groove. I felt mysteriously out of sorts. I told everyone I was going home, and felt great relief at making the break from what usually is--and actually was for everyone else--great comaraderie.

When I got home, smoke was billowing out out of the front door. My husband had left something on the stove with the burner on, and I was able to avert a fire and the potential lose of our 200 plus year old home.

The dogs were in the car with me so they were safe.

My two most precious possessions, my love machine (MacBook) and violin, as well as everything else including all the family pictures which I inherited upon the death of my parents, would have been destroyed.

Detachment From Loss

I will always remember a gentleman, a Zen Buddhist Monk, who lost everything in a fire, near where my husband and I were married, in Milbridge Maine.

He was a prolific writer and composer and lost all of his original compositions, with nothing saved, nor copied or stored in another location.

All of the people in the community where he lived were amazed by the complete detachment that this man exuded regarding the loss of his creations, as well as everything else he owned.

Soon after the fire, this man played a five hour concert, which we attended.

He was totally in the moment, fully concentrated, thoroughly enjoying the music, which he played entirely from memory.

This was 25 years ago, and because of the extraordinary way that this man faced adversity, I will never forget this.

My Violin

The violin pictured in this lens was willed to me by my father's oldest sister, who must have thought I was the only niece or nephew who could possibly play this instrument.

Actually, she gave me two violins, but one of my boyfriends at the time stole it. I never saw him--or the violin--again.

Bob Davis?? Are you still there?? You can still make amends for your thieving ways!!

But my favorite of the two is this one. It has a beautiful sound which resonates well acoustically if I play in a room where the music is well contained.

I would not want to have this violin stolen or lost in--heaven forbid--a fire.

So I would have to say: my violin is my most prized possession.

But I now am also conscious of the need to do something with all my pictures.

Thank you!!

Well I am learning more and more about you with every visit. I love the way you tell the story of your relationship with your violin through the words and the pictures.

SquidAngel Blessings for you.

I love my violin - my dad bought it for me in 1971 and it's one of the few times he really helped me in a way that mattered - and I make my living playing it - but if it burned up I would buy another. I think now that I'm 55 years old I would feel some sense of relief (along with much sorrow) if all my things were gone. I have an awful lot of stuff and too many memories. Fascinating lens.

Hear, Hear - my violin is my number one posession, as well! People laugh when I carry it into the grocery store and restaurants - if I have it with me while I'm out - I take it with me everywhere

The violin is such a beautiful instrument. My daughter plays on occasion, but has lately been living the happy-go-lucky life of a teen. Perhaps after college she will pick it up again. Thank God for your intuition!
