Celebrate Save the Frogs Day!

Each year, near the end of April, we celebrate Save the Frogs Day! It is a day set aside by Save the Frogs founder, Dr. Kerry Kriger to focus on the plight of frogs which are disappearing at a rapid rate all around the world.

Today we will look at ways in which a classroom could celebrate Save the Frogs Day and learn the steps necessary to make a difference in the environment of the frogs in our own neighborhood. Activities will include reading about frogs, counting and interpreting data about tadpole and frog populations, writing poems and keeping journals about frog observations. Throughout the day, we will be focusing on frogs and learning ways in which we can change our behavior as individuals to improve the chances of survival for frogs. Most activities will be adaptable to homeschool families as well.

Together we can make a difference and help to Save the Frogs...

If we are to save the frogs we must know about frogs. Today we will learn about frogs. This selection of frog books will help us to gain a common knowledge of frogs.

The children are eager to celebrate and demonstrate their knowledge of frogs today as we begin the celebration to Save the Frogs. Even before we start the day, some children run down to the frog pond to spend a few moments observing and recording their observations in their morning journals. They will have a chance to share their observations later on during Writing Workshop.

Then we gather on the rug to read about frogs. We have been reading about frogs since the beginning of the year so today I ask the children to choose their favorite books to reread. You might think that it would be a story of the Frog Prince but you would be surprised. The children in my class often prefer non-fiction books that help them to increase their knowledge of the frogs they observe down by the frog pond. Today we reread Frogs by Gail Gibbons.

Just before reading, I ask the children to brainstorm all the facts about frogs they can remember from reading the book before. We list them on chart paper. Then as we read through the book we watch for these facts. As we run across them we check them off on the chart. This helps the children remember what we learned from the text

Next we discuss the what frogs need to survive and whether or not we provide that type of habitat in our school yard and ways that we might improve the habitat for frogs.

Oh, i wish I had done a lens on frogs. We have a small pond (we made it) and the frogs right now are making lots and lots of noise at night! My son recorded the decibels and it's about the level of a subway train. It's loud. I like your lens. I like frogs. Linda

Did you know that by placing Frog statues by all of your doors-facing your door is Feng Shui? It helps to bring prosperity into your home. Great Lens you did a great job on it. In honor of these little frogs I have to drop off a *Fly Blessing* (frogs eat flies right?) :-)

Right now, I'm saving the frogs by not putting the cover back on my pool because some frogs have decided to take up residence in it! They seem quite happy there, and I enjoy hearing them croaking at night, so I'm reluctant to remove their home. But I would like my pool cover back... :-)

Great idea. I'm lensrolling this to my wild flower garden lens as it concentrates on conservation. We don't have a save the frogs day in the UK, more's the pity.

A lot of people around us have been finding lots of tiny green frogs since the floods here in Victoria. Congrats on the purples star - blessed.

Great lens idea. My older daughter loves frogs.
  • VickiSims Mar 26, 2011 @ 10:21 am | delete
We dug a large pond our rural property and it has been so much fun to see the native spotted frogs who have found it. We also hear the music of the tree frogs every spring, although being so small they are hard to actually see.

The frogs in my area are doing great but I know that's not the case everywhere. Even people who don't care about frogs need to realize that they defend us against harmful insects so saving the frogs can help save all life (except harmful bugs, maybe). I don't use harmful chemicals in my yard and I have plenty of froggy friends and few insect pests.

Thank you for letting us know about Save The Frogs Day. I didn't know about it before but I think it's a great idea.
