Save Green (Money) by Going Green (Environment)
Over the years, I have saved a large amount of money by being environmentally friendly. I didn't start out by being an environmentalist either. That was never my intention. What brought me closer to going green was my desire to save money. I looked at all the places where my money was going and realized that if I made some changes I could save thousands. The funny thing was most of these changes were environmentally friendly ones. I created this area because I want to share all the benefits (both monetarily and environmentally) I have experienced by going green Here, I will quickly list all the ways I have saved money. I will also list new things I find in the future.
For more detailed descriptions of this list I will also be starting a blog. The blog will elaborate more on each topic here. Here is the blog:

Gas
Less Pollution in the air more money in your pocket
1. Keep the tires at the correct PSI (air pressure) at all times: driving around without proper air in the tires wastes gas.
2. Air conditioning and heat: Minimize the use air conditioning and heating when possible.
3. Avoid stop and go traffic: Street driving and traffic jams waste more gas than driving at a consistent speed
4. Weight matters: Having extra weight(tools, sports equipment, etc.) in the car hurts gas mileage.
5. Tighten the gas tank nozel: Leaving it open or loose will waste gas.

Cars
Car cost can be cut for the environment and for the bank account
1. Car shares: Many cities have started these programs. You pay to share a car with others. For more information see www.zipcar.com and www.phillycarshare.org
2. Carpooling: Travelling in groups or co-workers can cut bills for everyone.
3. Trains: They are usually cheaper and you can read or do something else while you ride.
4. Subway: The same as trains and just as cheap.
5. Bikes: In addition to great exercise bikes save tons of money and don't pollute at all.
6. Folding bikes: Folding bikes can be stored in small places and can be brought on subways and trains. With folding bikes you can combo between biking and public transportation. See www.dahon.com to see what a folding bike is.
7. Other public transportation: There are many other alternatives. Almost every city has a public transportation plan.
8. Hybrid cars and more: The technology is only going to get more efficient, cheaper, an better looking. In the long run you'll make up any extra car cost by saving on gas.

Home and Apartment
Homes can be more efficient as well
1. Fluorescent lights: These lights will drop your electricity bill down, are cheap, and efficient unlike incandescent bulbs.
2. Unplug chargers: Phones, computers, ipods...everything needs to be charged. Just don't forget to unplug the chargers when you are not charging.
3. Walls should have good insulation: Insulation materials between wood walls should be a standard to reduce heating costs and energy waste.
4. Certain materials are better insulators: Brick, glass blocks, double-paned windows, and drapes insulate better than wood, regular glass, and blinds and will lower the heating bill. This is good to know if you are building a home or apartment building.
5. Position of home according to sunlight: The position of a building on a property can create a much better temperature climate. The way a house is built determines how much sun a home receives. Architects take into consideration the position of the sun based on the property location.
6. Solar Panels: Although expensive they do save money long term. Some users even sell back their extra electricity back to the power companies for some cash. See the solar energy technologies program in the link list below.
7. Other alternative energy sources: Thermal heating, photovoltaic cells, solar shingles, hydro power (water), Wind power (wind mills and wind turbines), can also take your house of the electric grid and gas line without hurting the environment.
8. Weather Stripping: All of those large cracks in between doors, vents, and windows can be minimized with weather stripping tape.

At the Store
Some green benefits here too
1. Recycle: in addition to recycling programs, cans and bottles can be redeemed at most grocery stores for a nickel a piece. Other glass, metal, cardboard, and plastic can be brought to a recycle center. They will pay based on weight.
2. Bags: many grocery stores now have a bag program. You buy cloth bags and every time you use them at the store they will subtract a percentage cost for each bag from your grocery bill. Try to avoid plastic bags as well.

- This was informative. I liked the quick to the point listing. Sometimes browsing through long blogs can be cumbersome. Thanks I need to check my psi and unplug my chargers.
