Emotionally Focused Therapy - or EFT - What is it?

EFT is a short term (8-20 sessions), structured approach to couples therapy. EFT is also used with families. A substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT now exists.

Research studies find that 70-73% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. EFT is being used with many different kinds of couples in public mental health, private practice, university training centres and hospital clinics and many different cultural groups. These distressed couples include partners suffering from disorders such as depression, post traumatic stress disorders and chronic illness.

It's effective over 90% of time!

Happy couples resonate, you can help them learn to dance in sync

Strengths of Emotionally Focused Therapy

EFT is based on clear, explicit conceptualizations of marital distress and adult love. These conceptualizations are supported by empirical research on the nature of marital distress and adult attachment.

EFT is collaborative and respectful of clients combining experimental Rogerian techniques with structural systemic interventions.

Key moves and moments in the change process have been mapped into nine steps and three change events.

EFT has been validated by 20 years of empirical research. There is also research on the change processes and predictors of success.

Rebecca Jorgensen, PhD

Specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy Training and Support

"Becca" began clinical practice during her first undergraduate practicum course in 1989, where working with children, she quickly realized that she needed to work with parents to create lasting change, safety and help for the children.

Her interest has always been in relationships and families. Her first postgraduate in-depth couple training was with John Gottman and his "Scientifically Based Marital Therapy," where she was introduced to the phenomenal work of Dr. Susan Johnson and her model of couple's therapy.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) revolutionized Becca's work with couples, dramatically reducing their divorce rate. She completed advanced training with Dr. Johnson, becoming certified as an EFT Therapist and Supervisor and then was honored to be added to Susan Johnson's team of EFT Trainers.

With years of experience as an EFT Trainer, Becca is one of the handful of endorsed trainers that travels internationally to help therapists discover the power of using EFT. She is devoted to strengthening families through helping couples develop safe and secure marital bonds and helping other therapists learn more effective couple's therapy.

In addition to training therapists in Emotionally Focused Therapy she also specializes in distance and online education. She has taught Psychology, Family Life Courses and Counselor Education for many years at the University where she has been a faculty member.

She is currently the Director of Operations and Development at the Training and Research Institute for EFT at Alliant International University. Dr. Jorgensen holds the Licenses of Mental Health Counselor and Clinical Professional Counselor and is a Certified Supervisor. She continues to maintain a clinical practice in conjunction with her passion for advancing education and training in Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Dr. Woolley is an AAMFT Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor, and a Certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer.

Do you do marriage or couple therapy? Like, for real?

Rebecca Jorgensen, PhD

I remember the days before I practiced Emotionally Focused Therapy. In those days, I thought I was doing it what I intended to, I thought I was a good marriage counselor.

I was introduced to Sue Johnson's work by John Gottman. Gottman was THE GURU so when he told me (as a workshop participant) to look up Sue Johnson's stuff I did just that. There I was, I had read Creating Connections which was more than my colleagues had done and my mom always said when I was growing up "If you can read, you can do anything." (The break down in logic might be obvious to you but it took me years to realize that statement just flat-out isn't true.) So, I was doing couple's therapy. I was, really. I had couples in my office. They paid to see me. It was the backbone of my career.

When my couple's ended up divorcing or quitting therapy, I had thoughts like this:

"Gee, that wife, if she'd just stop complaining maybe their marriage would stand a chance."

"That couple was too far gone, they came in too late."

"There's been too much injury here, no wonder they're in trouble."

"They didn't really want to make it work, they just used therapy to say they tried everything."

Back then, words like this came out of my mouth during sessions:

"Time out, time out! Let's remember to use I statements."

Hmmm, I think you should try this..."So, what I want you to do is make a list of all the things you remember liking about each other."

"Your homework is to start dating again, go out without the kids and be sure to have a good time together. Your relationship needs more nurturing."

"The first thing to do is to think about what your spouse would like and do one nice thing for him/her every day. Don't expect any appreciation for it, just do something you think your spouse would really like."

I might have even recommended books like "Men are from Mars and Women from Venus" or "The 5 Love Languages" thinking they would be helpful.

Does any of this sound like you?

If so, then you're probably a lot like me and chances are the outcomes of your couple therapy are probably a lot like mine were

around a 40% success rate, if that good, and if you're counting.

Success???

What if you could make a much BIGGER difference?

Oh wait. I know, you've been told you're not suppose to base your success on if the couples you see get divorced or not, after all that's not up to you. Let me ask you this: What if that's not true?

* What if the couple's level of distress starting out therapy really doesn't make a difference to the outcome?

* What if, how effective you are as a marriage counselor really is evidenced by the couples not only staying together but falling back in love? (Now that's a delight to see!)

* What if, whether you're couples stay together or not really has as much to do with what you do in therapy as to what the clients bring in?

Do you ever get that sick feeling? You know, when a couple calls and says they've decided to split up...

You try to push the feeling away and remind yourself, "they just came in too late."

But inside, you still feel awful.

A Map Makes All the DifferenceIf you listen to that awful feeling, it's trying to motivate you to do something...that's what feelings are all about.

You know you care. You know you work hard. You know you want to truly help.

So what do you need to do?

Maybe what you really need is to get a MAP so you can help your couples get where they want to go?

A map makes all the difference in where you end up. And if you're the guide, you need to know what the terrain is like so you can help couples get there.

Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples is just that, a fantastic map to help us save relationships.

I hope you'll join us,

Becca:-)

So where can you get THE MAP?

It's called the Science of Love!

Emotionally Focused Therapy took a combination of elements such as working with emotion, attachment theory and experential systemic process and put them together into a powerful model that's proven effective.

You can hear Scott Woolley, EFT Trainer extraordinaire talking a bit about it here.

I would love to see an externship come to central Connecticut. I see that Sue Johnson is coming to NYC in June, but I hate going into NYC.
