Introducing My Aunt Helen

Lives in Germany

My aunt Helen from Germany is someone who I admire. I admire the kind of woman that she is and how she has always lived her life.

I have known her all of my life and have visited her many times for extended periods(and lived with her for a couple of years when I was 18).

She sets an example for me because she is the only woman related to me that is very independent, intelligent, wise, has an incredible inner strength and is hard-working and tough.

Though she comes from the older generation (she is in her 80's), she has always led and been the pillar in her family.

When you talk to her, she is honest and you can ask her anything and she will give you an honest answer. There is no "sugar-coating" of answers to sensitive questions. She just tells it is total candor and truth.

She is also a person that you know you can depend on. She will move whatever mountains are necessary to make something happen if someone in her family needs it done. She stands her ground when she is right and no one will sway her to her purpose. She will allow no one to put her in a submissive role.

She knows how to manage a household, she works in her fields, watches grandchildren and great-grandchildren, manages finances, cooks, cleans, has worked outside the home, and is always available when you need her.

She has never owned a car, nor drove one. She does all of her local errands on bike or walking, as this is the way it was for her growing up and living in a small town in Germany where she still lives.

When you come see her, she always has coffee for you and cake and will cook something up for you if you are hungry. She always has time for you.

Even though she has enough work of her own, if she knows a neighbor or someone is in need, she goes to their house with food or will do any work or errands that they may need done without complaint.

My favorite thing to do is to sit with her in her kitchen (in Germany) in the evening and listen to the radio softly playing German music while she crochets or does a crossword puzzle. I usually read magazines or books and then stop every few minutes to ask her questions about things that pop in my head about life. She is always open and willing to talk and answer many curious questions related to her own experiences and opinions. It is very satisfying and comfortable for me to just sit with her in this manner. I always look forward to visiting her in Germany and this is my very favorite thing to do there
