Introducing My Idol(s)...
The Bryan Brothers
My sports idol is actually two people: Bob and Mike Bryan, the Bryan Brothers. Currently they are the #1 professional doubles tennis team in the world and arguably the best doubles team in history - although they are still making history. I, like them, am an identical twin and play tennis with my brother. Mike is older than Bob by two minutes. My twin is 10 minutes older than me. Things I Admire About My Idol...
The most exciting aspect of the Bryan Brothers game - or rather persona - is the "Bryan Bump." At the conclusion of an exciting point, they will jump up and give each other a chest bump. Chest bumps in tennis? Yes!
The Bryans have been active advocates and ambassadors for the importance of doubles tennis for growing the sport. After the Bryan Brothers won the Master's Cup in Shanghai in 2005 for the 3rd year in a row the ATP Chairman was quoted as saying:
"This could not happen to a more deserving pair. They represent all we seek in great sportsmen: they are talented, dedicated and passionate; and they know how to win. And in addition, they are approachable, charismatic and highly promotable athletes and role models. We hope they will continue to play an integral and highly valued role in professional tennis." -- ATP Chairman Etienne de Villiers
More About My Idol...
I had a chance to personally meet the Bryan Brothers at a Hartford FoxForce tennis match of Team Tennis on July 15, 2006, shortly after their victory at Wimbledon. Since we attended the match in USTA Davis Cup uniforms, the public address announcer saw us in the stands and quipped "and now the real Bryan Brothers have arrived". It got a laugh from the crowd and the Bryans acknowledged us by tipping their rackets. We chatted with them after the match and posed for a photo opp. They joked "what are you going to take our spot on the U.S. David Cup team?" I chuckled and said "no not now, maybe when you retire." They are genuinely nice guys. To quote Roger Federer, the world's #1 ranked men's tennis player: "It is nice to be important, but more important to be nice." Tennis Books I Recommend...
