Burt's Bees Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), Honey Bees Dying

Why are the bees dying? Why are honey bees disappearing from across the US? Well, Burt's Bees (http://www.burtsbees.com/) is raising awareness about an environmental issue called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) to find out and help save the dying bees. Colony Collapse Disorder is the sudden dying of bees causing the whole honey bee colony to collapse leading to widespread disappearance of bees from our environment. While the exact causes for bee Colony Collapse Disorder are unknown, we do know that forces like habitat destruction, misuse of pesticides, invasive species and global warming create risks to honey bees. You can help make the planet a healthy place for bees. Sign up for a free packet of wildflower seeds to plant and give bees a healthy place to live in your neighborhood. We're also providing access to support local organic farmers who naturally create pesticide-free, bee-friendly environments while providing local communities with healthy fresh produce. By saving the dying bees, we save a lot more than the bees. Be involved. For The Greater Good. http://www.burtsbees.com/colony-collapse-disorder

The Honey Bees are Dying and You Can Help

Honey bees are dying all the time and we don't know why. Have you heard about the honey bee Colony Collapse Disorder? If not, it is time you learned about it and what you can do to help.

Honey bees impact all kinds of things and not just the making of honey. For example, they also impact much of our food and other crops.

Here is part of the description from Wikipedia.

Colony collapse disorder (or CCD) is a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.[1] Aside from fundamental concerns about the survival of bee species, colony collapse is economically significant because many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by bees.

So what can you do to help?

Penn State University is doing research to discover how the problem started and how it can be solved and many companies are stepping up to help by donating portions of their profits on product sales to Penn State.

Haagen-Dazs has created a honey vanilla ice cream.

Also brand new as of April 1st. my home fragrance company has created a honey vanilla candle and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to helping this cause.

So you can help by purchasing products from companies who donate to the cause, or you could donate to the cause directly.

Have you watched the Bee Movie? It is very good about informing children about the importance of the honey bee. After watching the movie my son (who is 6) is not as afraid of bees...especially honey bees. Now he looks at them when they are on flowers vs. running from them. Nice job with this lens. 5 *'s
