Why PB&J is Better Than a Burger
PB&J Fights Global Warming
Can you really reduce your carbon footprint with a sandwich? Amazing, but true!
Why? Because, as bizarre as it may sound, livestock actually are a major cause of global warming gases. According to a United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization report, "the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent - 18 percent - than transport." In addition, the report notes that livestock creates "65 percent of human-related nitrous oxide, which has 296 times the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of CO2."
That's why choosing peanut butter over a burger is good for the environment. According to the PB&J Campaign, you can actually save the equivalent of 2.5 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions by choosing PB&J over an average animal-based lunch. "That's about forty percent of what you'd save driving around for the day in a hybrid instead of a standard sedan," the campaign says.
And it's a lot cheaper than buying a Prius!
PB&J Saves Water
More incredible facts about those sandwiches you loved as a kid
Why is that important? The UN FAO says, "Global water use has been growing at more than twice the rate of population growth in the last century." This, coupled with the water shortages predicted due to global warming, mean we should all be concerned about doing our part to conserve water.
Once again, PB&J beats burgers. It takes less water to create this sandwich than a hamburger. The US Geological Survey says, "a hamburger, for example, requires water to raise wheat for the bun, to grow hay and corn to feed the cattle and to process the bread and beef. Together with french fries and a soft drink, this all-American meal uses about 1,500 gallons of water--enough to fill a small swimming pool."
A PB&J, on the other hand requires much less water. According to the PB&J Campaign, "the water it takes to produce the beef on one hamburger could produce peanuts for about 17 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches."
Ain't it amazing to see what a little ol' PB&J can do?
PB&J Combats World Hunger
Is there any end to the wonders of a simple sandwich?
It's simple - if everyone in the world were to eat lower on the food chain some or all of the time, the food, grains and land now devoted to feeding livestock would be available to grow crops for people.
It only takes 1 pound of grain to make 1 pound of bread, but it takes 20 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of beef. Think how many PB&J sandwiches you could make with an entire pound of bread!

- This is a great eye opener. The free world has grown far too dependant on products that come from the store, and we no longer consider what it takes for us to have them.

- I love this lens! If I may be a bit snooty for a moment, might I suggest a plug for sunflower seed butter? We've got peanut allergies here, but the sun-nut butter is yummy and also contributes to saving the planet!!!
Now I'm hungry - off for a sandwich!
