  1. MSN Money's consumer centre is dedicated to you. We help you make the most of your money while dodging the scams that try to rip you off.[1] Having them at the wrong pressure can increase your fuel consumption. Save fuel and money - pop into a garage and check them today.[2] Lights, windscreen wipers, audio systems, air-conditioning and heating all increase your fuel consumption ? Most are essential in certain conditions, but there are other things you can do to make your driving more economical.[3]

  2. Packaging uses energy - unnecessary packaging consumes unnecessary energy. [4] The latest GfK NOP index of consumer confidence published this week read minus 19, which, to translate, means we have not felt worse about our personal financial prospects since February 1993. And no, I didn't get the decade wrong - we really haven't been this depressed for fifteen years.[5] This extra surface area allows more heat to be extracted from the combustion process for the same amount of fuel that is consumed in a non-condensing boiler. They require less fuel to apply the same amount of heat to the system, producing less greenhouse emissions.[6]

  3. If you have to drive, get a car that has a low petrol consumption. If you commute to work or do the school run by car, team up with neighbours to share the journey and the cost.[7] A water meter calculator is available on the Consumer Council for Water's website, where customers can work out if installing a meter could save them money. [8] Fierce competition amongst credit-card issuers for good credit consumers has forced them to come up with new ways to get you, the consumer, hooked onto their credit card. The result so far is super-long low rate periods to 0% deals on both purchases and balance transfers, and even 0% offers on cash advances.[9]

  5. For regular journeys try advertising for a lift in exchange for sharing petrol. Again, there are sites online to help you.[13]

  6. Get up to 15 months interest free. [15] Bank/building society interest and dividends from investments are not really income, they are just a return on your investment. Rather than using a gross income figure, you should work out what your net monthly income is.[16]

  7. Bringing all of your loans together and consolidating the debt will mean that you have only one monthly repayment to make, one interest rate to handle and can accurately monitor how much remains outstanding and accurately predict when everything will be paid off. [20] Look at insurers who offer flexible payment methods, including interest free monthly instalments and money to cover the cost of any transfer fee charged by your current insurer. At this time of year it is important to ensure that you are sufficiently covered for both buildings and contents as the unpredictable weather causes more problems with flooding and storm damage each year.[21] Mortgage lenders invariably charge a higher interest rate to loyal customers. However, as soon as you indicate a willingness to move they will offer you a better deal to keep you.[22]

  10. The typical family car owner spends around 50% more than a decade ago on running costs according to the AA. Obviously the smaller the car the better and not buying new ones saves a fortune in depreciation.[36]

  11. Check to see whether the government or agencies may be able to subsidise this. My local council (Oxford) provided cavity wall insulation for free!.[37] To wrap presents economically, I buy different-size brown shopping bags with handles from my local arts-and-crafts store. I use different Christmas tissue for each gift.[38]

  12. If only using a small pan, then use a smaller burner, this saves on gas and will not damage your pans by the flames burning up the side of the pan. Boiling water in the kettle first will save the time the gas needs to be on and putting a lid on with help it come to the boil quicker.

  13. A lot of the tips in these pages are simple and can be implemented for little or no financial outlay. Often it is the simple things that give the greatest energy savings.[49] Also depending on your facilities at work, you can have a wider variety of lunches available rather than the usual pre-packaged sandwich. [50] All these things are damaging the environment that we live in. We, as individuals can make a difference and help create a greener and healthier place to live.[51]

  14. If you do use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent, using around a quarter of the electricity and lasting up to 12 times longer. Energy efficient bulbs cost around ?5 each, but will give you a saving on your bills of ?10 over the year.[52] Manage to plug a few other leaks and your money pot will not be empty when you need it most. [53] Sure, gas may be an extra 20 cents per gallon, but if you ask the pump jockey (or petroleum engineer, in today's parlance) to check the following items, you'll more than make up the difference in gas mileage, wear and tear on your car, and your general peace of mind while you're on the road. Good luck out there.[54]

  15. In my experience no one price comparison site will always find you the cheapest deal, but if you try all three of these sites, you have a very good chance of finding the best value rental package for your needs. [58]

More Tips and How to Send Money, Save, and Protect Yourself from Scams

I save money by subscribing to Sky since I can then get free broadband.

Money can be saved by making many simple changes to your life, most of the best of which are explained on Martin Lewis's excellent website www.moneysavingexpert.com .

Send Money and Save

If you want to send money to someone, there are more and more ways you can do so. There are some ways that are better than others, and you do have to think about security when you send. You really have to think about who you are sending the money to, and what avenues are open to you. Your methods will depend on how well you know someone, and how quickly they need the money. You also have to be aware of the scams that are out there so that you can keep your money safe.

If you are sending money to a family member that is having an emergency, sending money over a wire though a company like Western Union might be one of the best things you can do. They will get them money very quickly, and you can usually find somewhere in almost any town to send and receive. However, if you are sending money for anything else, you should never use this service. If you send money for an eBay purchases, or to someone else for something online, they can take the money, and there is no way you can get it back. To be safe, use this type of service for friends and family only.

If you want to send money for a purchase on eBay, you should take advantage of Paypal. If you use a credit card though Paypal, you are doubly protected. If something goes wrong with the sale, or you think someone had scammed you, you have ways to get your money back. Though sending money this way is more secure, you will have to go through a process to get it back, but it is possible. Sending money through any type of service that offers buyer protection is always the best way to go.

Don't Send Money to Someone You Don't Know

Never send money to someone you don't know. I can't understand why people are doing this, but there are so many being duped by fake emails and other Internet scams. Someone sends out random emails to random addresses, and waits for someone to reply. They tell them they are going to get a lot of money, but they have to send money before they can get it. They may ask for checking account numbers, and then they will clean you out. Use common sense. There is no free money, and no one is going to send you millions because someone died that you never knew. Delete and move on, all you are going to get is taken.
