How a Charity Helped Us
Why we do what we do
My husband and I were at our pediatrician's office one day and heard the words, "Your son has PDD". PDD stands for "Pervasive Developmental Disorder" and is one of the autism spectrum disorders.
Our hearts stopped cold.
After the news settled in, we began to question his diagnosis. So, we did what everyone else does - search the web, talk to other parents, look for specialists, etc. He was severely speech and language delayed and had difficulty with transitions and appropriate eye contact. We saw a developmental pediatrician who immediately recommended behavior and speech therapy.
During our quest for information we did a whole lot of web searching. My husband mentioned that several of the sites we visited earned money from our viewing of the various links and ads. What if we could build a site that would help educate people about autism while generating income for medical research?
We began constructing a website to do just that. But as we designed the site, we talked to other people and realized that there are so many issues that profoundly affect us as humans. No matter who you are, there is SOMETHING you care deeply about. From this reality, Homepage Heroes was conceived.
Homepage Heroes donates money to the most important cause - YOURS. Whether you have a child struggling with a developmental disorder, are an animal lover, or want to protect the earth, you can help - and we are here to help you do it!
Since our son's first diagnosis, with the aid of some wonderful and dedicated therapists, he has nearly caught up in all areas of speech, language and behavior. There is still work to be done and we are unsure what exactly caused the delay. But, without the organizations that conduct valuable research, our son would not be where he is today.
We are so grateful to all of the people who have helped our son, directly and indirectly. Homepage Heroes is our way of giving back to charity. The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is our charity of choice. What's yours?
A Great Chartiy
Organization for Autism Research (OAR)
Celebrating its ten year anniversary in December 2011, the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) was founded based on the vision of OAR's seven founders - all of whom are parents or grandparents to persons on the autism spectrum. Using science to address issues unique to autism.OAR's mission is clear, "to apply research to the challenges of autism". Applied research, as defined by OAR, is research that "directly impacts the day-to-day quality of life of learners with autism". Further described as "practical research that examines issues and challenges that children and adults with autism and their families face everyday".
OAR is a four star rated charity by Charity Navigator, one of America's leading independent charity evaluators. To receive four stars from Charity Navigator your organization must exceed industry standards and be a leader among most other charities within the same cause. Your organization must also be in good financial standing. Of all the charities evaluated by Charity Navigator, only 1563 (as of May, 2011) are given this elite status.
