Things About That Thing Called Marriage

In 1997 roughly 3 million couples were married.

Roughly 1.5 million were divorced.

Today the rate of divorce has decreased but so has the rate of marriage, due to couples living together without marriage.

The breakup rate for cohabitating couples is twice the rate of divorce.

Surprising?

It was to me.

So many friends who live together have said.... oh we will last much longer for we are together because we choose to be, not because some paper says we have to live together forever.

Somehow I gave them the benefit of the doubt and even halfway believed maybe they were right .. until I realized one simple fact.

A marriage license is not a piece of paper saying two people have to live together... it is a promise by two people to back each other till death do them part.

There is quite a diffence in those two explanations of that piece of paper.

Getting married is that time honored commitment to another because of something deep inside that even the word love cannot describe.

Getting married goes far beyond the wedding and the words.

Getting married goes the distance as it is tested over and over and over again. With each test two people are reminded by a piece of paper of the vows they made .. and another test is won.

When living together... there is nothing that concrete of a reminder. Perhaps the feelings are there.. but they are never made to be tested... for at the first or second or third hint of trouble .. one or the other can just so freely leave.. and more often than not.. not return.

The true feeling is never tested... therefore never found.

Marriage has always been time honored and there is no other commitment that can come close to the rewards it brings.
