Saving Shelter Pets, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization with members located throughout the United States and Canada.Saving Shelter Pets works to eliminate euthanasia of healthy companion animals as a method of population control through rescue and transport, spay and neuter, and other innovative programs.
At this time, Saving Shelter Pets' primary focus is on high-kill shelters in Georgia. Georgia, and other areas in the Southeast, face a monumental pet overpopulation problem. Every day, thousands of perfectly adoptable animals are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them all. While many shelters in Georgia have made great strides toward ending the unnecessary killing of healthy pets, many shelters simply cannot handle the numbers of animals coming through their doors. Even worse, however, is that many shelters still use the gas chamber as a method of "euthanasia." This method of killing pets has been almost universally condemned as inhumane. SSP strives to end the unnecessary euthanization of companion animals through both long range programs and rescue efforts aimed at those pets in imminent danger of euthanization. Though its Rescue and Transportation program, Saving Shelter Pets has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats from imminent death and transported them to wonderful no-kill rescues and sanctuaries in other areas. From there, these pets are adopted into loving new homes.
SSP has a wonderful intervention program called Puppy Promises that keeps litters of unwanted puppies out of the shelters and spays the mother dog.
SSP also has a wonderful spay and neuter program providing spay and neuter assistance in several counties in Georgia, and recently, in Ohio, as well. Spaying and Neutering is the KEY to ending the pet overpopulation problem.

You Helped SSP to Earn a $10,000 Grant!

A $10,000 matching grant was awarded to the top six charity badges. To win the contest, a charity had to generate the highest NUMBER of donations, collected through its charity badge. It was not the highest dollar amount of donations that won, but the highest number of donors. In other words, it was a contest to see how many people could be inspired to get involved, and help to make a difference.
In this contest, Saving Shelter Pets received 861 donations. We finished in the top 10, very close to the top 6. While SSP did not win the grant money, it was an amazing finish considering we are a small grass roots organization made of a handful of volunteers, and many of the other charities were national names. It is something we are quite proud of. The donations from the contest alone gave SSP enough money to sponsor 60 dogs for rescue & transport, plus supplement the funding in our Puppy Promises, Spay/Neuter, and Bernie's Buddies programs as well!
SO - SixDegrees.Org started another contest- and SSP WON!
We asked all of our friends and family to help us and the animals by donating just $10 to SSP, through the SixDegrees charity badge. We were SO CLOSE last time, and we were committed to winning the grant money this time around!
The $10,000 grant for our organization can potentially save over 60 cats & dogs -- or spay & neuter over 200 animals -- or sponsor 25+ litters in our Puppy Promises program -- the possibilities are endless!
SSP was in the top six finishers in the Six Degrees contest, meaning that they received the $10,000 matching grant! Just think of how many animals will be helped by that extra $10,000! A big thank you goes out to the hundreds of SSP supporters and friends who took the time to donate and pass a request on to friends and family to do the same! When each of us does just a little, we can do a LOT!

Thanks for posting this page, it has alot of great info and resources. I get all my animals from shelters and I think it is so important to save the pets that way. Those poor little animals need homes and it's sad because there are so many of them. If it wasn't for the animal limit laws I would probably start my own shelter.

You are doing great work! I know the animals would appreciate your efforts. I was lucky. I adopted a dog from the shelter 8 years ago. He was there 6 months. I don't even want to think about not having him if they euthanized him a week after he got there. I wish all people could be responsible, Every cherished pet I bring home, I get neutered because I do not want to contribute to another animal or more being in the shelters. All those animals deserve homes and someone to love them. Carry on. I admire you. Posted January 23, 2008 |
