The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron
Introduced to The Artist's Way in the mid-1990's, I soon found this book was the very outlet I needed.Julia Cameron's basic tools of writing daily morning pages and going on a once a week artist date provided the inspiration for a journey into the inner workings of my soul.
I was able to hook up with an online group working through The Artist's Way, which gave all of us an opportunity to connect with like-minded souls.
I will forever be grateful for this series of books that has led to countless hours of writing pleasure. During the process they opened a creative stream I had no idea existed, and prepared me for challenges and accomplishments that probably would never have come to light had I not allowed myself to work through the tasks.

Morning Pages
The morning pages are three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing, in longhand. The premise is to allow whatever is inside of us to come out on paper, with no self criticism or judgment.Just take pen in hand, writing paper of your choice, get comfortable somewhere, and write. First thing in the morning (after grabbing your favorite beverage) before the day's activities demand your attention.
Someone asked what size pages. Well, I use a five section college ruled 8 1/2 x 11" notebook with great success. Others use much smaller books, and that's okay. Use whatever style of writing paper you choose. The point is to "just do it" as Nike says.
I like the challenge of the larger output and I have found that, at times, I can go on for eight or nine pages.
Writing Prompts Help Jog Your Creativity
A writing prompt a day will keep your creative juices flowing!
Although most of the time I use stream-of-consciousness writing for my morning pages, I also enjoy using a prompt or two before I start any creative writing. There are so many varities of writing prompts that you could use several a day and never run out of prompts. Here are several books that you can utilize to jump-start your writing session.
The Artist Date
Keep a list handy for your weekly artist date
The artist date is a brilliant concept sometimes difficult to institute into your life. There are hundreds of places to go, things to do, and people to see that will inspire your inner artist to produce great works. An artist date is something you do by yourself! You may run into others during your date, but the point is to spend quality time with yourself. Allow your inner creative child to open up and come forth.
One of my favorite dates is going to a hardware store. I just love to walk the aisles and check out the merchandise. Other ideas may include a visit to a museum, a trip to an ethnic neighborhood or restaurant, a walk on the beach during a sunrise or sunset, or see an indy movie.
You can even stay home and bake a loaf of bread, entering into the process of kneading the dough, smelling the aroma of baking bread, and tasting its goodness.
Begin a list of possible artist dates, or check out Julia's suggestions in her books. Free write your list and you will be amazed at what comes to mind. Then, follow through for a fantastic time with a special someone - you!

The Weekly Walks
You will find the walks clear your mind and help you gain focus on your life and your writing. Problems seem to sort themselves out, inspiration appears when least expected, and writing blocks are cleared.
