How to Shop Savvy
The first key to savvy shopping is knowing where to go. I have a circuit that I follow each week to the following locations: the local thrift shops, yard sales in "rich" neighborhoods, super sales at the mall, and the sale section of online stores like Lucky Brand Jeans, J. Crew, and Banana Republic.
The second key to savvy shopping is knowing when to shop. For the thrift shops, I go on my lunch break. Going early in the day helps me to catch new items that have just been brought out to the floor. If you're able, it's better to go even earlier--around 10:00 am. For the yard sales, the trick is going about fifteen minutes before they start, to catch the best items before they're gone. For the sales in the mall, wait until the final markdowns. If you're not sure about when the final markdowns occur, just ask an associate! For the online sales, again, wait until the final markdowns. I keep a list of sites that I know have good sales and I check them regularly for deals.
The third key to savvy shopping is investing the time. You won't find something great every place you check every time. You've got to check in regularly to see what's available. I frequently go into the thrift store and come out with nothing or go to the mall and there are no good sales, but when I do find that diamond in the rough, I know it's been worth it!
