Saw Palmetto and Prostate Health

Saw Palmetto is a popular herb for treating enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In both clinical studies, and in antidotal evidence, saw palmetto berries have been shown to improve greatly the signs and symptoms of an enlarged prostate. This effect seems to be due to its ability to inhibit dihydrotestosterone which is the compound that causes the prostate cells to multiply excessively.

Enlarged Prostate Symptoms

The prostate is a doughnut shaped male sex gland that is located beneath the urinary bladder. It encircles the urethra, (urinary outlet). The muscles of the prostate contract to squeeze fluid from the prostate into the urethral tract during ejaculation. The prostatic fluid is what makes up the bulk of semen.
Symptoms of an enlarged prostate can include:

  • A weak urine stream with frequent stopping and starting

  • Difficulty starting urination

  • Frequent and urgent desire to urinate, especially overnight

  • Dribbling of urine, especially after urinating
