You Can Find a Good- to-Great Saxophone on the Internet, But Be Aware!
Thinking about getting a saxophone? There are thousands and thousands of them for sale online. That's the good news. The bad news is that some of them are poorly made cheap copies imported from various third world countries, and others are perfectly good saxophones that are in need of an overhaul. You can't really tell how much that overhaul will cost in advance, and the sax can still be a good deal if you find a great old sax online at a good enough price.
You can get saxophones via the internet at online stores like Musician's Friend. Another popular source is eBay, and both of these links takes you right to the saxophone listings.
For tips about buying a sax online, see the first link in the list just below here. (I wrote that article and summarized a lot of what you need to know.)
Best wishes in finding your sax and in having a lot of fun with it!

Buying Saxophones Online
Some Top Websites
- Tips (and Warnings) About Buying Saxophones Online, from SaxophoneBargains.Info
- This is a page I worked hard on, to give a good overview of advice, definitely including some warnings, about buying a saxophone online.
It's in 3 parts and goes into a lot more detail:
1.Find the Returns Policy!
2. Find Out About This Particular Sax
3. Investigate the eBay Seller... Even Before Investigating the Sax! - The Best Sax Forum Online
- "Sax on the Web" is a great forum for everything to do with saxophones. A lot of players hang out here and they don't hesitate to give advice!
- Saxophone Category on eBay
- This takes you to the saxophone category on eBay and will show what saxophones are currently for sale there, of all kinds. There are often over 2000 listings, but it's easy from there to choose a subcategory (on the left of the page) or type a search term in, a bit higher up on the page.
Be sure to read my Tips and Warnings page before buying anything! It's linked to just above this one. - The Vintage Saxophone Gallery
- SaxPics.com is a place to see what particular makes and models of saxophones look like, very useful if you are thinking of buying a used sax. I also really enjoy just learning from this site. See my next link down for an example of one of their interesting pages.
- The Great Selmer Mark VI Saxophone
- The Selmer Mark VI, made from 1954 to 1985 in alto, tenor, soprano, baritone, bass and sopranino, is arguably one of the greatest saxophones ever made.
This page, an example of what you can find at saxpics.com, makes that argument very successfully from someone who has played a dozen or more of them.
It's fascinating history, in any case. - Hot! New Listings Page, from SaxophoneBargains.Info
- If you are keeping an eye on saxophones for sale on eBay, you may want to bookmark this page from my website. The listings on it update continuously, whenever someone loads the page. They are sorted by newest listed, which is not how it is usually done; normally listings show according to how soon they will close. I set tis up to search for anything listed under sax, saxaphone, or saxophone.
- How to Buy an EBay Saxophone
- Great article by someone who has serviced and played saxophones for many years.
Thinking of buying a cheap Chinese sax for your child? Read his comments. ("So much crap, so little time.") He goes on to make some good recommendations. - Helpful Hints for Buying a Student Saxophone
- Observations by a parent who recently bought a sax for a 6th grade child. Good advice. This page, like the one above, are in the excellent ebay guides pages, which are little known.
Selmer Mark VI on eBay
Not sure if there will always be any... but since I mentioned this classic saxophone in my links above, I thought it would be a good example of what's on eBay. Hmm, I see some of what is coming up are label pins! Oh well.
Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand bySaxaphone or Saxophone?
You spell it how?
The correct spelling is saxophone. This line of instruments was named after a Mr. Sax, who invented and named them, back in the 1840s.
Of course, you can spell it sax. And you can also call it a horn!
The popularity of the spelling as saxaphone is something to remember if you are searching for information or eBay sales. You'll find things few others will by using both spellings!
