Tour the North American Lighthouses

"Part of the appeal lighthouses have is that they are found in some of the most beautiful settings, often on rugged coastlines dotted with conifers or on sandy beaches lined with palms. Lighthouses can also be found in the remote extremes of the country where a sunset or sunrise over a large body of water can be enjoyed in complete solitude. A perfect viewing platform for these spectacular settings is the walkway encircling the lantern room atop the lighthouse." - Kraig, LighthouseFriends.com

Taking a road trip tour of the hundreds of lighthouses around North America is an incredible way to see the country, it's natural wonders and it's roadside oddities and it's cheap too!

A guide to North American lighthouses

Where to go, how to get there and where to stay

Chicago harbor lighthouse

Here you will find all the resources you need to plan a tour of the hundreds of lighthouses in and around North America. There are maps showing the exact locations of the lighthouses as well as photos to show you what you will see before you get there. There's recommendations and reviews from other travelers but, best of all, you can Learn from the Locals by talking directly to some of the people that live next to and around these monuments. Friendly, helpful people happy to share their advice, hints and tips like Janelle (known as CCGAL on Squidoo) who lives right near both the Battery Point lighthouse as well as the most dangerous lighthouse in America, Saint George's Reef lighthouse.

Where to stay?

Cheap, comfortable accommodation

North Head Lighthouse

The car (or motorcycle if your wife will let you have one) is packed and you're excited to head out on the road to see the wonderful lighthouses dotted around our coasts and rivers but where are you going to stay? Will you camp out? Will you sleep in the car? Wouldn't it be great if you could stay at one of the lighthouses? Well you can! Thanks to our helpful friends Kraig and Marilyn over at LighthouseFriends.com, below is a map of 48 lighthouses in North America that also provide accommodation for visitors.

Thrinsdream says:

I wouldn't do a tour of lighthouses, but would definitely have a look if there was one where I was visiting in fact, we are off to Flamborough Head just up the road tonight to do just that! Talk about coincidence!

mihgasper says:

Why not eat some pringles INSIDE lighthouse?
