While the skin of the face and body comes in contact daily with various bacteria, the skin of the scalp can look inviting to other microorganisms as well. Fungus can grow in the scalp. Mites can be living in the pillow (a resting place for the scalp). Mites and yeast, as well as bacteria can cause scalp acne. Physicians have given scalp acne a special name-"scalp folliculititis."

Scalp Acne

A patient with scalp acne has tiny pustules growing inside the scalp. Most of those pustules develop along the hairline. The patient with scalp acne typically complains about an annoying desire to itch those pustules. The patient might also complain that those pustules have become hard and sore.

A person who wants to treat his or her scalp acne should purchase some cotton balls and a solution of salicylic acid. That solution should then be used to moisten one or more cotton balls. The moistened cotton ball can then be used to pat gently on the area with the scalp acne.

A person with scalp acne should not refrain from washing his or her hair. Frequent washing, using any type of mild soap is going to expedite the removal of the scalp acne. That removal can take place at an even faster rate, if the person with the scalp acne uses an anti-dandruff shampoo.

Products that contain ciclopirox or ketocamazole can help with the fight against scalp acne. Such products have chemicals that can kill fungus. Such products should allow the user to use a conditioner, following a washing with the dandruff shampoo.

A person with scalp acne should avoid any product that contains peroxide. While peroxide works effectively against facial and body acne, it is not an ideal way to treat scalp acne. A product with peroxide can easily cause changes in the hair color of the person who has tried such an ill-advised acne treatment.

Once someone has managed to get rid of scalp acne, there are ways to hold-off a return of that condition. Since mites can cause scalp acne, anyone intent on avoiding such a flare-up should have plenty of pillowcases, and he or she should change them often. As mentioned above, a return of hair fungus can be prevented (prevent acne) by using dandruff shampoo.

Scalp acne worsens when a person is under a good deal of stress. A person who does not eat a healthy diet might also expect to have problems with scalp acne. The skin on the scalp needs the same nutrients as the skin in other parts of the body.
