A Brief History Of Scarborough

Scarborough Castle

One of the most prominent features of Scarborough is the castle located on the headland. Most people don't realize it was the Romans who were the first to use the headland as a defensive base.
Around 370AD they built a signaling station which was used when the attacking Saxons were sighted off the coast. Fires were lit on the headland which would warn the Roman forces of impending attacks.
By the 12th century a castle had been built on the headland and a town shot up around it mainly through the port which was used as a base for fishermen and exporting goods.
Through the centuries Scarborough's population has suffered various setbacks through wars and disease.

When Scarborough Became Popular

The Spa Complex, Scarborough

It was in the 17th century when Scarborough revealed it's jewel in the crown with a discovery of a spring at the bottom of the cliffs which contained traces of iron. This was a major discovery and Scarborough became a spa town.
Scarborough really took off as a seaside resort in the 18th century when sea bathing became popular.
From then Scarborough has really flourished and still enjoys a large tourist economy all year round.
Although the summer months are the busiest time Scarborough is a beautiful get away destination even when it is snowing!

Nowadays the Spa complex is used for conferences, exhibitions and shows. If you would like more details please visit their website.

A Little Bit About Modern Scarborough

Scarborough Foreshore

Scarborough is located on the east coast of england and is one of the premiere seaside resorts on the Yorkshire coastline. It's main feature is the headland which gives Scarborough two very different bays.

The North bay is picturesque and only has a few buildings dotting the view. The most prominent being of the Sea Life Centre located at the very north of the bay. This stands out because of the white pyramids which house the centre.
A new development is currently underway which is creating apartments, cinema, shops and more and will transform the view dramatically.

The South bay, pictured above, is where all the attractions are and is definitely what modern Scarborough is famous for. With it's golden sandy beach and amusement arcades, shops, restaurants and the smell of fish and chips make it one of the quintessential parts of the UK tourist economy.

Scarborough's North Bay

As viewed from the cliff tops I find this view amazing, the photo doesn't really do it justice.
The buildings on the left of the photo mark the edge of Scarborough's town center and in the very distance is the open countryside. You can just make out the white pyramids of the sea life centre in the far right corner of the photo.
The road at the bottom of the picture links the north and south bays and goes all the way round the castle headland.

Scarborough Lighthouse

Scarborough has had a lighthouse on Vincents pier since the start of the nineteenth century. It has undergone plenty of improvements since and is still a useful beacon for boats sailing into the harbour.

Located five miles down the coast from Scarborough, Filey is a small town with an excellent reputation if you want to take it easy. Take a walk on it's long sandy beach or peruse the shops in the small town.
Robin Hoods Bay
Situated between Scarborough and Whitby Robin Hoods Bay is an area of outstanding natural beauty. If you fancy a walk down the hill you could go looking for fossils on the beach!
Whitby
Whitby is steeped in history and is a busy town all year round, mostly day-trippers from Scarborough. The town is a small fishing town and it's main attractions are situated around the large harbour.
York
York is the nearest city to Scarborough and I would recommend a couple of days in York as there is so much to take in. My favorite place in York is The National Railway Museum. It is free to enter and is a great day out even if you aren't a train enthusiast.
