Scary Halloween Masks - Rubber Latex Masks

Scary Halloween Masks are creative works of art that come in many shapes and forms. They are worn over the head and are paired with some other form of costuming, such as clothing, gloves, a cape, accessories, etc. While Scary Halloween masks can be made from plastic, vinyl or silicone, the higher quality masks are usually made of Latex Rubber, which is also why many people often refer Halloween Masks as Latex Masks or Latex Rubber Masks. These masks can be worn on any occasion, but are more typically enjoyed during holiday festivities, such as Halloween - which is a holiday traditionally celebrated during the dawn hours of October 31st and contains celebrated activities such as trick or treating, haunted houses, costume parties, bobbing for apples, carving pumpkins, watching scary movies or telling ghost stories.

Latex masks were commonly used in the past during filming of movies and theater production for creating illusions, which nowadays are referred to as special effects. Even with today's standards and the evolution of CGI (Computer Generated Images), Latex Masks still play an important role involving special effects. Its 3-dimensional imagery and realistic approach to the arts keeps it alive and well within the industry and probably will never lose its luster amongst true performing artists.

Throughout the years, Latex Halloween masks often portrayed monsters, skulls and other mythical creatures such as Count Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein's Monster, but in more modern times have evolved into famous celebrities and politicians such as President George Bush. Generally speaking though, and in keeping with traditional Halloween costumes, the most popular of all rubber masks are of the horror genre... otherwise known as Scary Halloween Masks... and during Halloween time, it is often considered that the scarier the mask appears, the better.

The creation of Scary Halloween Masks (or latex Halloween masks) are divided in several stages, with the first stage often beginning with a mold of the character. Technically, this is referred to as the "positive" or "male" mold. The second stage involves the sculpting process, which is a plaster mold previously created and split into two pieces. This ensures to capture the full detail of the entire head.

A different method that is often incorporated is creating the head mold on the actual person. This method is often undesirable for the subject used, but often generates the best results. The method involves the subject sitting in a reclined position while plaster of paris is poured and smoothed directly on the subject's face. The subject breathes through straws inserted into the nostrils and also wears a skull cap as to add a smooth finish to the inside of the mold without the creating cracks and crevices caused by the hairs. Again, the process involves two parts -- the front and back of the head. Templates are used for easy separation and removal, and once dried, they are joined and bonded together to form the "negative" or "female" mold... whereby plaster is poured into it to create the "male" or "positive" form.

Once the positive mold has been made, the negative mold gets split to remove the positive form. After careful cleaning, additional modeling clay may be added to give the mold more distinctive features you wish to acquire. The mold created then becomes the new "negative" form, which is recast and hollowed out to pour the latex into. After a short while, the latex rubber has dried within the mold and is now considered to be the "positive" -- and it can be peeled away, painted and designed to any degree, leaving the end result to the artists creativity for what they wish to create.

And there you have it! Not entirely simple, but a process that works and has been working over the last several generations. :-)

Some of his many accomplishments were seen in the successful TV shows of Rod Sterling's "The Twilight Zone" and in Mission Impossible. In cinema, his creations are famously recognized by creating the ape in "King Kong" and the scary swamp monster from "The Creature of the Black Lagoon."

His son, Don Jr., still works within the industry under his father's company entitled, "Don Post Studios." Even today, Don Post Studios creates many of the higher grade latex Halloween masks we all buy at the stores and online.
