Schecter Hellraiser C1 FR and other C1 Models Compared

The Schecter Hellraiser C-1
one of the most over hyped electric guitars for heavy metal. Some people go on and on praising how good this guitar is.

Is All The Hype True?

Schecter Hellraiser C1 FR

Rank: #1
Sound: 4.5/5 (For Heavy Metal)
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4.5/5
Finish: 3.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Schecter C1 design is a combination of a Les Paul and a Strat. The body is a double cutaway with deep access to the last frets and scale length of 25.5 inches. The body and the set neck are made of mahogany, some models offer maple tops.

I've read some reviews of players that don't like the way these guitars feel. I don't know if it's because I've played so many but I can't find many people in the real world that don't find Schecters C1 very comfortable to play.

This particular model offers a floyd rose system which is of very good quality and stays in tune perfectly. The fixed bridge model is just as good of course. This one has a locking tonepros bridge, I'm surprised all non tremolo guitars don't come with this.

EMG's

The Schecter Hellraiser C1 FR offers the same body that all the C1's offer. The black and white are all mahogany while the quilted cherry has a maple top at no extra cost. The purpose of Schecter with the Hellraiser is to offer a metal guitar and this is achieved with the EMG pickups.

The black one looks very close to the Schecter Blackjack. The Blackjack has cream binding on the body while the Hellraiser gets all fancy with abalone. One difference is that the neck in some of the other C1's is bound, not on the Hellraiser.

The tuners are Grovers like in all the others. Has a battery compartment in the back for the active pickup. The new Hellraisers have a cool new feature, you can now split the bridge pickup into a single coil. Until recently there was no way of splitting an active pickup.

I can attest that all C1 bodies are the same but I am not alone in believing that there is something about the Schecter Hellraiser C1 FR.

The Schecter C1 Classic

Rank: #2
Sound: 4.5/5 (For Rock and Hard Rock)
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4.5/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Schecter C1 Classic has one feature that is important and noticeable, a neck thru design. Of the 3 types of necks in electric guitars no other has the sustain of a neck thru. This guitar sustains for days.

The neck of the C1 Classic has cream binding, all of the choices have a quilted maple top. And all except the blue have gold hardware. The main feature that jumps out of this guitar is the floral pattern of the fret-board. I've always wondered if more players would like this guitar if it didn't have that inlay.

Seymour Duncan Pickups

The pickups are the Seymour Duncan combo JB/Jazz and this is becoming so predominant that most guitars are kind sounding the same to me. The tuners are Grovers and the bridge locking Tonepros.

I've witnessed more than one argument between parents and their children over this guitar. Especially mothers who think this guitar is so pretty but the children think it's too pretty.

The Schecter C1 Classic offers incredible sound and playability. The sustain is endless, the neck addictive and the pickups very good. It's not that cheap but they definitely are offering features unheard of under a grand. The only drawback is that it might be too fancy for some.

Schecter C1 Exotic Star

Rank: #3
Sound: 4/5 (For Hard Rock)
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4/5
Overall Value: 4.5/5

The Schecter C1 Exotic Star has some more pronounced differences. This guitar is more in homage to the original heritage of Schecter guitars. The body is slimmer and so feels the neck.

I would say the whole guitar feels more like an Ibanez. But the nice add ons are the pickups which are Schecter originals. Big and Fat rock n roll tone.

Some touch ups are the ebony fingerboard which some people believe are magnets for the right notes and the top of the pickups match the finish. This guitars reminds me of the Epiphone Les Paul Ultra in the sense that it offers a popular guitar in a more comfortable setting.

Schecter C1 Blackjack

Rank: #4
Sound: 4/5 (For Hard Rock)
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 3.5/5
Overall Value: 4/5

The Schecter C1 Blackjack is very close to the black version of the Hellraiser. The only differences are:

The binding on the body is cream
Cream binding on the neck
The pickups are Seymour Duncan

If you play these guitars for a long period of time like I did eventually you start discerning little specs like the effect of the binding in the way the neck feels in your hand. But for the majority this is insignificant. Think of the Gibson Les Paul Standard and the Studio.

This guitar also comes in a baritone model that I must say it's the coolest thing ever. Playing this one so much almost got me fired.

The Schecter C1 Plus

Rank: #5
Sound: 3.5/5 (For Rock and Hard Rock)
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 3.5/5
Overall Value: 3.5/5

The Schecter C1 Plus is also very similar to the Blackjack, it has body and neck binding. But the pickups are Duncan Designed. Also there is a flamed maple top that is not featured on many of the other C1's.

This company has a tendency of making people decide between fancy finishes and better pickups. I got tired of telling every one that all those lines on the finish don't add anything to the sound and even though maple does add some character to the sound of this guitar the Seymour Duncans of the Blackjack add more. But no, everyone still drooled over the vintage and amber sunburst.

I should note that I don't think Duncan Designed pickups are not that bad just that a Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pair on a killer mahogany body is better (in my opinion). But my preference could also sound more generic as so many guitars these days are featuring a Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz combo.
