Bad Movies are Wondrous!

This is my lens in which I promote the high entertainment value of horrid, low-budget movies and televisions shows. You will be able to read about cold war science fiction, Japanese giant monsters, Gothic fangs, swords, and guns entertainment, horror madness in various forms, blaxploitation and bringing down the Man, and martial arts goodness from around the globe. I will be posting reviews, comments, suggestions, and various related trivia and other Easter eggs, as well as tips on grabbing some of this hard to find material as I find it.

What makes me the expert? Maybe nothing. Nothing other than having hosted what I called "Bad Movie Night" every other week at my home for over 19 years (partially providing stadium style seating in my living room, thanks to a great roommate!) and the experience of having worked in video rental stores or being a projectionist in theatres for over 22 years. I do not consider myself completely knowledgeable one though - that is part of the reason for this lens. I welcome reader's comments and suggestions (guestbook at the bottom of the lens,) so that we can all benefit from these postings and gain a fuller knowledge base and understanding of what is truly great about bad movies and television!

Here is a little tid bit that I am sure I share with most of you readers - I have been watching movies like this since I was a child. I remember my dad calling me into his bedroom on Saturday afternoons to watch Jet Jaguar team up with Godzilla to defeat Megalon or to see Gordon Liu learn "scaffolding-style" kung fu at the monastery to defeat the bad guys in town. What I suspect I don't share with many readers is holding a dream job that led me to start inviting my friends over to watch bad movies in the mid 1980s. I landed a job working for a video store as a reviewer or promotional tapes! All I did was take home a box of 30-40 video tapes per week, plough through them, and report to the store owner as to whether or not I felt the students at university near by may rent them or not. Wow! It was great! The first two films I pulled out of the box were Octaman, a Mexican horror flick about a half man, half octopus legend (see the trailer below,) and Raiders of Buddhist Kung Fu, the aforementioned Gordon Liu at his "worst" (or best depending on what you are looking for in a movie.)

I called three of my closet friends on the phone and said, "You bring the muffin mix and I will make some homemade ice cream. Get over here. Now! You won't believe your eyes!" They came over promptly and we baked and churned and watched rubber tentacles swat at dummies of Mexican workers and poorly done slapstick comedy mixed with poorly choreographed martial arts (not Gordon Liu, really, but his supporting cast wasn't very supportive, if you get what I mean.) We laughed until we had headaches and the ice cream was gone (orange chocolate chip, if I recall correctly.) The next week we watched more and three more people came; two weeks later ten people came and started bringing pot luck foods, et cetera. And that was that. Bad Movie night had begun.

This lasted until I had to move away from the South of the United States to pursue a master's degree in Ethnomusicology at University of Hawaii. Now I am moving again very soon, this time to London for more scholastic fun. This blog, in a way, is going to partially take the place of Bad Movie Night until I can get settled enough to start it up again. I hope you all enjoy this blog and the suggestions that I make and even more so, I encourage each of you to start your own Bad Movie Night and enjoy all the rotten, ridiculous, horrid films out there that have brought me so much "pleasure" over the years.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some of the key people that made Bad Movie Night happen, if I may: Stacy Rumph and Jon Black for bringing the strawberry muffin mix that first night; Matt and Johanna (recently married! Congratulations!) that supplied untold numbers of rotten films for the watching; Kim Jones and Chad Boyd for letting me host this madness in our house for untold years; Michelle LeCompte and John Snead for not missing a BMN that I can recall, my new friend Paul Cunningham who is unbelievably knowledgeable concerning horrid, ill produced entertainment, and most especially, my late brother Sean Johnson, possibly the greatest connoisseur of bad movies known to man!

Thanks for reading and look for the first suggestion and review to appear this week!

Rotten, Low-Budget Science Fiction Movies and Television

Bad movies probably cannot be separated from cold war science fiction flicks and TV shows. I am going to take them as a launching pad, as it were, to talk about the films I love and why I love them.

One of the first "bad movies" I sat through was Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space. If you are here reading this, you have probably seen an Ed Wood film. Plan 9, Wood's 2nd film, takes the cake for rotten-ness and prepared me for years of appreciating horrid films.

Plan 9 was Bela Lugosi's (Dracula) last film. He died during the filming of the movie and Wood got a "double" who looked nothing like Lugosi to finish his scenes, hidding him behind a cape. Wood spent most of the film's budget hiring Lugosi (little though that may be) and skimped on the sets in a big way. For instance there is a mausoleum set and an aeroplane cockpit set that are one and the same (the cockpit was the inside of the mausoleum,) built with plywood, wooden kitchen chairs, and a broom stick. The set is so cheap that it wobbles when used. The liner notes for the soundtrack for Plan 9 claims the budget for the film was under $800 and after the film was finished, Wood still had enough money left over to take the cast and crew to McDonalds for lunch.

For opening night, Wood wanted to get Lugosi's body exhumed so that Wood could prop up his coffin at the cinema. Understandably, he was denied.

The film also featured The Amazing Kriswell, who was billed as a psychic and hypnotist for his acts. His "chilling" predictions of interplanetary conflict that open and close the film are so ludicrous that he seems to be having trouble keeping a straight face.

The best "acting" (and I do use the term loosely) comes from the leader of the aliens, who some how seriously yells about the stupidity of females and how humans are "stupid, stupid, stupid!"
Vampira (Maila Syrjäniemi) and Tor Johnson cannot be left out of a discussion of Plan 9. The tiny waisted Vampira and the titanic Johnson are zombie-like victims of the aliens (Plan 9 uses the deceased to assist the alien's take over of the planet.) One of my favourite parts of the film is just before Johnson is turned into an alien assistant; he says something in "English" and walks off leaving the actor to whom he is talking looking quite perplexed. (He says, "I'm a big boy now Johnny")

Basically, if you are a bad movie fan, you must see this movie! Be sure to put on your laughing shoes, your alien protection hat, and ENJOY!

Dakaiju and other Giant Monster Movies and Television

The obvious thing to discuss here would be a Godzilla film, or perhaps Ultraman, but instead I am going to address something much more low brow than these well-know Japanese monster presentations: Spectreman.

In this TV series, there is a guy that turns into a rubber-clad robot who can alter his size and he battles beasts from outer space to save the World. Sound familiar? It should. It is basically the same plot as ¾'s of the dakaiju TV shows out there. What makes this one so special? In my opinion, Spectreman stands out because of its awful sets and costumes, great music, and completely stupid writing.

The bad guys that are trying to take over the Earth are space gorillas, some with blonde hair (a la Planet of the Apes) who regularly send giant creatures to do mean stuff in Japan. That's where Spectreman comes in. Terrible monster wrestling ensues, as expected, but that's not the only attraction. There are also wonderful disco scenes (the space apes frequent such places) and some really, really, really poorly designed monster costumes.

Perhaps the best part of the show is the opening sequence. There was an original theme that had somewhat of a nationalistic sound to it while the syndicated version had a hippie/rock opening song, both of which are superb! (check out the you tube video below)

I think one reason I loved this show, other than I watched it religiously as a child, is that I think I could have made the monster suits used in the TV show. Some of the creature's eyes appear to be household items painted green or things bought at the 1000 yen store taped together. Combine that with a few explosions, a week plot, fun music, and silly combat scenes and you have Spectreman, a wonderfully entertaining scholcky TV series that I highly recommend!

Splat Pak: Zombie Doom/Zombie '90/The Possession of Nurse Sherri/Rock & Roll Frankenstein

Zombie 90 is one of the WORST movies ever and yet one that I have seen an untold number of times. Great overdubbing and low quality SPFX. Some adult content. (Sorry there is no picture). Zombie Doom is a sort of sequel (and quite fun). A Must-See!

Godzilla's Revenge

A beautifully made film from the inside of a little boy's mind who learns about living in the real world by interacting with Godzilla and one of his sons. Great music, rubber suits, and giant monster wrestling!

Fangs, Swords, and Guns

Gothic, Horror, and Psychological Thriller Flicks and TV Shows

Horror of the Blood Monsters!

This film could be either Gothic fangs and guns fun or simply rotten SciFi entertainment, but either way, it deserves a review!

Sort-of starring John Carradine, this film tells the tale of Earth being attacked by vampires from another planet and the spaceship crew that travels to that planet to attempt to thwart the efforts of the extraterrestrial blood-suckers.

My favourite parts of the film include the horrid effects used to denote that the viewers are watching scenes taking place on another planet. Full screen filters that are no more than red, yellow, or green washes take over certain shots to help you understand what's going on. It doesn't work so well, though, but it's fun!

There are several great caveman-esque vampires that have some superb encounters with the spaceship crew and other vicious life forms on their home world. I particularly enjoy the lake scene where there is some sort of evil beasts (mostly rubber ones) lurking in the murky waters. I didn't sleep for days after seeing that! Oh! And I dare not forget the cave of flying Bat Men! One thing this film has going for it: more low-budget creatures than at which you can shake a stick!

If you want to watch absolutely wretched acting, hear stupendously awful dialogue, see some of the worst special effects know to cinema, and catch a gothic SciFi classic with an unbelievably ridiculous plot, then the 1970 release Horror of the Blood Monsters (aka Vampire Men of the Lost Planet) may just be the flick for you!
