Choosing School Name Labels

Ranked #10,918 in Parenting & Kids, #416,000 overall

What Types Of Name Labels Are Available?

Iron On Labels
Some iron on labels are now very good but equally some are useless, the problem for parents is that all suppliers will say their labels are good, and there is no way of knowing until the labels are in a washing machine what the quality is like. Hot irons and children do not mix, so attaching iron on labels will be a job for adults. Self-adhesive name labels can be applied by older children and are easier to use. Many parents tend to find that iron on labels come off in the wash.

Sew On labels
Sew on labels are usually very nice looking and can be bought in a range of colours, fonts and sizes from some very good companies. For parents who have the time to sew labels in, or can pay somebody else to sew them in, sew on name labels are a good durable solution.
For non-sewers, busy parents or large families, sew in labels can be a nightmare.

Laundry Marker Pens
You can simply write in your child's name with a laundry marker pen, if your child's name is short or can be easily abbreviated this can be a good cheap solution. The problem is that many garment tags do not leave any space for writing a name. The result may not look particularly good, and may fade away. Also children like to see their own names in full rather than an abbreviated version. The full name is also good for children who are learning to recognise their name.

Self Adhesive Name Labels
Self-adhesive name labels are a solution to a range of annoying and unnecessary problems caused by all of the above alternative methods. They are very easy to apply, durable and easy to read.

Which School Name Labels Are The Best?

People like to be aware clothing and possessions belong to them, and in most cases this is not a problem. If lots of people wear the same type of clothes, or have their clothes laundered at the same time then some kind of identification is needed. There are many kinds of name labels and we evaluate all of them as follows:

Name Label Appearance:
The best looking labels are printed fabric or woven labels which need to be sewn into uniforms, second place is shared by iron on labels and self-adhesive name labels and last place has to go to laundry markers and biro where the name is written into the garment.

Speed of Name Label Application
The fastest method of labeling clothes is a laundry marker followed by self-adhesive and then iron on labelling. Sewing in labels comes last in terms of speed especially if one is a non sewer, or have several labels to sew in.

Name Label Durability:
Washing machines are designed to remove dirt from clothes, and have harsh environment for labels. Labels can fail because they come off or because the print fades. A well sewn in woven name label is the most durable solution and it should survive the life of the garment. Mixed results come from iron on labels in terms of staying in; some are very good and some are poor, the kind of fabric they are ironed on to is also a factor, but they tend not to fade. Self-adhesive school name labels generally survive extremely well if applied correctly and the print does not fade. Laundry markers do tend to fade with time but there is no issue regarding falling off.

Name Label Cost:
Laundry markers are the lowest cost and there are also some low priced label sew in name tapes. Woven and embroidered labels have a range of prices and are generally more expensive than iron in labels and self-adhesive name labels. The most expensive name labels are the ones that fail, or need replacing often so buying cheap may not be good value in the end.

Which Name Label Is the Best?
None of the labels above is an overall winner, all have pros and cons and the best labels for you will depend what is most important to you. If appearance overrides everything go for the best woven labels, if cost is vital buy a marker pen, if you want a good all round performer buy self-adhesive name labels. A referral from a friend or samples first is a good way of making sure of the quality of iron on labels, which can also be good all rounders. So good luck choosing school name labels for your children's clothes.
