I am going to Kindergarten
Am I ready?
Each state has an enrollment date as to when children can enroll into kindergarten. Legally, that date makes any child ready for school. But how do you know if your child will be successful in kindergarte? Should I consider redshirting (a term used when referring to a child from enrolling in kindergarten but waiting the following year when they are a year older.) Parents should understand that in a classroom of 18 5 year olds, there will be 18 indiviual children, all learning at different rates.
When researchers asked teachers what they look for in children who are ready for kindergarten, they will tell you the following: Chilren are ready if
1. They can follow directions
2. They are able to work independently
3. They are enthusiastic about learning
4. They have the ability to play well with others
5. They know some basic letters and numbers
Although it would be nice if the children know alot of pre-academic skills, educators are now more concern that children enter with a love of learning, socially and emotionally ready to be away from home, and have strong oral langauge skills.
So what can you do at home? Ready every day. Let your little one begin to do some things on their own. Let them have time to discover how things work. Also, enjoy talking with your child. In the past it was said that children should be seen not heard, now we know how important vocabulary and oral langauge development is to school success.
