School Yearbooks Information For Buying and Selling
The basics of selling school yearbooks online. Which types of yearbooks are more popular than other types of yearbooks? Looking for celebrities ... methods and gambits. And more!
I have 1,500 school yearbooks for sale. I have sold hundreds of yearbooks online. You need a lot of patience to sell school yearbooks, the good part is that yearbooks are very unique and rare and when a buyer finds the book he wants or needs they can not usually easily shop around much for a better deal on another copy of the book.
The photograph is from the cover of a 1942 Long Beach California junior high school yearbook. The interesting photograph got my curiosity going as to the Pledge of Allegiance salute the students are giving in the photograph. My mother graduated from high school in 1943 and I asked her about the Pledge of Allegiance salute and she said indeed that was how they did the salute back then but that may have been the last year as it looked a bit too much like a Nazi salute. Private and church schools didn't seem to give that salute as I asked an elderly lady that attended a church school if she gave that type of a Pledge of Allegiance salute in her day and she said no.

Seeking the stars!
To find a bonus hidden in the yearbook can take a lot of looking, if a famous person is what you are hoping for anyways.
The Wikipedia pages for schools are increasing curtailing the use of 'notable alumni' in their format. It's still a good place to look though. The municipality where the school is located at is a good place to look at in the form of the town Wiki or Wikipedia. If there's a strong chance a major celeb is in the yearbook that you are researching and you know the celebs name but not exactly which school they attended you can try Googling the celeb's name along with words like 'graduated' or 'attended'. Sometimes you get lucky and some in depth celeb biographies have education sections with school names and town names.

Most Popular School Yearbooks
High School yearbooks appear to be by far the most popular and desired yearbooks. Perhaps the memories of elementary and middle school are not as clear or happy as their high school years? Or college was not for fun?The elementary and Junior / Middle / Intermediate yearbooks are rarer as the tend to be tossed more often than a high school yearbook.
I have a theory that the rapid and avid growth of social networking sites such as Face Book are indirectly bringing a want or desire of many people to see the yearbook photos of many of the members on those sites. Curiosity is not just found amongst cats.
The calendar years that are the most popular seem to be the 1960's. Many people that attended and graduated from school in the 1960's are nostalgic and many have misplaced their yearbooks over the last forty years. The 1970's are the next most popular decade in my opinion.
Many people buy yearbooks to see their parents or other relatives so any year no matter how old can find a buyer.
Researching A Yearbook
When school yearbooks are created oftentimes little thought is given to identifying where the school is located at. This is not a problem if the school as a unique school name but common school names can be a real problem as there can be many schools of the same name. For example, a John F. Kennedy High School can one of hundreds. Sometimes you can Google the school name and the team name ( ie: Tigers ) and get the school or some school ads for local merchants may reveal the city/town where the school is located. As a last resort you can use classmates.com to research the location of the school. As an example, I recently bought a "lot" of yearbooks on ebay and there is a 1982 Fremont Junior High School yearbook. There is no mention of the town. There are several schools named Fremont Junior High School in several different states. I have tried the graduating year and attendance years search functions to locate students registered on classmates that maybe listed in the yearbook. In this case I can not find anyone that has registered on classmates in the book ... the Graduating Year = 1982 and the Attendance Years = 1982-1985.Very frustrating going through several schools and finding no matches.
