Sciatica Exercises
The Best Sciatica Exercises For Relieving Pain: To understand what the sciatica exercises are for is to understand what sciatica means. Radiculopothy is the medical name for it. It is better defined as the irritation or pressure on the sciatica nerve that causes extreme pain in the lower part of the back.
The exercises give the muscles a strong foundation and will help to lower the pain and symptoms of the sciatica. It sounds like it would cause more problems with the back pain but, activity will actually do the opposite. The exercises will need to be performed in a slow and easy way to provide the best benefits.
These sciatica exercises and instructions are listed below:
1. Abdominal Crunches - These are, as sit-ups except you do not go all the way to the knee. Lie flat on the floor. Bring your knees up and make sure your feet are flat on the floor. Place your hands behind your head. Raise your upper body toward your knees. Keep your head straight. This can be accomplished by imagining a tennis ball under your chin. Move slowly up and then down to the start position.
2. Hamstring Stretch - Lie on the floor flat on the back. Place your hands under you thigh and slowly lift the leg in the air. Use your hands to support the leg. Hold it for a count of tem and then slowly bring it back to the floor. Switch leg and repeat. Keep the foot flat with the ceiling. Try to get yourself up to twenty to thirty seconds of hold time.
3. This exercise is completed on the stomach. Lie on the floor and place the toes on the floor so the heels are pointing straight up. Place the hands behind your head. Very carefully, lift your torso off the floor. Pretend you are arching your back. Hold for a count of five and release. Complete ten of these.
4. Back Stretch - Lie on the floor on your back. Keep the legs straight. Bring the knees to the chest. Hold behind your shins for support. Lower to start position. Hold the knees for a count of six. Repeat ten times.
If these exercises are repeated two times each day, you will be able to feel the symptoms of the sciatica reducing. Exercise will give the discs in the back the lubrication necessary for good health. Make sure you are completing these exercises in the correct way and with the right body posture. If unsure of the exercise, the internet can provide you with the right illustrations to teach you. As with any exercise program, contact your doctor before starting these to make sure that the sciatica exercises are right for you.
