Sciatica Spasms | What Causes Them And What Can You Do About Them?

Sciatica Spasms are as painful as they sound. The pain makes you want to move all over and to stay perfectly still at the same time and you can't achieve either. It drives you up the wall. Your buttocks and often also your thighs feel like about to cramp, but the feeling isn't momentary; it's constant and so bothersome that you can't really find a position that actually feels better.

To give you a little context, the sciatic nerve runs from the lower spine through the pelvis and the buttocks, through the back of the leg all the way down to your foot. There is a whole list of causes for sciatica pain, starting with herniated disks in the lumbar spine, over spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis of the spine and hard to pronounce conditions like spondylolisthesis to strained muscles. Today I'd like to focus on sciatica spasms. Now one word of advice, especially when it comes to nerves and spine and such: See your doctor to make sure what causes your sciatica pain before starting any kind of treatment, because a treatment that may get you great relief for one cause of sciatica pain may aggravate another cause. So know what you are dealing with, before you actively go about the dealing part.

Possible Causes For Sciatica Spasms | Muscle Strain

- Simple muscle strain can cause sciatica pain. The strained muscle gets inflamed, which in turn puts pressure on the sciatica nerve, which then makes you go up the walls.

Anti-inflammatory medication will most likely be prescribed and once the inflammation cedes, massages and careful exercises may bring relief. Lying on a firm surface may help to relief some pain when it is acute.

Possible Causes For Sciatica Spasms | Poor Posture

- Poor posture is the underlying cause of most back problems, since, especially for prolonged periods of time, it misaligns the whole body and the spine in particular. Misalignment increases pressure on your disks and nerves, strains muscles and can lead to chronic conditions if not corrected on time. Poor posture may cause a disk to rupture, which then puts pressure on the sciatica nerve and inflames it, which may cause muscles surrounding the inflamed area to spasm.

Massages and stretching exercises will most likely be prescribed as treatment. Calcium and Magnesium supplements may also be used to lessen spasms. Muscle relaxants may be used in severe cases.

Possible Causes For Sciatica Spasms | Piriformis Syndrome

- Another cause is Piriformis Syndrome, a disorder that causes a muscle within the buttock (piriformis muscle) to contract. The continued pressure and friction then irritates the sciatic nerve. If this is the cause, the pain starts in the buttocks and from there moves down the leg.

A common treatment would be prescribed stretching exercises and massages to loosen up the contracted muscle and anti-inflammatory medication. Heat helps to relax the tightened muscles, especially moist heat.

Some General Measures You Can Take To Lessen Your Pain Or Even Prevent It:

- Get a medium firm mattress, firm enough not to sag and to support your spine along it's entire length and soft enough to carry the entire body. A mattress that is too hard will not let the spine rest along it in its normal alignment and may cause pressure points on the parts that will have to take most of the weight, like your hips and shoulders. A mattress that is too soft will not support your spine and let it sag, that way putting too much strain on muscles and ligaments.

- In agreement with your doctor do some muscle strengthening exercises that will build up your back muscles, which in turn will then hold up your spine. That way less pressure is put on your lower back and your sciatic nerve.

- Watch your posture. Proper posture can greatly relieve your symptoms, while improper posture will most likely have caused most of them in the first place.

- Learn lifting techniques and proper positions to sleep, lie down, sit and stand. You may find yourself amazed as to how many things we can do wrong when it comes to our back and how simple it is to correct our errors.
