Welcome to My Science Toys Lens

Having home educated my own children for a little over 12 years, we have had our fair share of science experiments on the window ledge, in the fridge, on the dining table and all around the house.  I also ran a shop for a few years selling educational toys and science kits.  So we had a few on the go in the shop window as well.

So time to put some of my experiences down on paper (or screen).

Ant Farm

Ant Farm
This one is always a favourite with the kids! Click on the pic to buy from curiousminds.co.uk
A word of warning - don't put grapes in the food container, unless you want your ants to be drunk! (seriously, it really happened)

Triops

King Of The Temporary Pond

In a dry and arid desert, storm clouds gather. It begins to rain and small ponds form in the earth. This triggers an amazing biological event. Tiny eggs that have laid dormant for years come to life.' A week later the pond is teeming with weird and wonderful creatures - 'fairy shrimp', 'clam shrimp' and 'daphnia'. But the biggest and most impressive of all these animals is 'TRIOPS* - the king of the temporary pond - whose ancestors date back to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Triop World
You can have your very own Triops by clicking on the pic.

Butterfly Garden

Butterfly Garden

These were a top seller when I had my shop. Best purchased in the summer months or you will have to wait to receive your caterpillars. Watch the caterpillars grow and each one forms into a chrysalis. Carefully move them into the garden kit and wait for them to turn into beautiful butterflies. Just keep them in there for a couple of days before setting them free.
