Doing Scientific Experiments and Getting Results

Many times, people especially when they first start out in research science do not know how to produce original research similar to the type of original research that they see produced in their scientific field of study. It seems like these scientists created new knowledge out of thin air!

One of the Keys in How to Do Scientific Experiments and Get Results

As Santiago Ramón y Cajal stated in his concise book "Advice for a Young Investigator," the most important criterion in successfully performing scientific experiments and obtaining original scientific results is just to do lots of experiments. Perform the experiments over and over, sometimes varying certain parameters, and always recording the results. Only after having done a sizeable number of experiments, will you know how to do experiments practically, as well as be able to have enough data to critically analyze the body of data such that they give meaningful scientific results. Therefore - that is perhaps the key to successfully carrying out experiments. Just keep doing more and more.

At first, it may not make any sense, and it may feel that there are no real results. However, clarity will begin to emerge after an extended period of these experiments. In this sense, getting good, reliable, and interesting results is a result of having performed those experiments after a certain amount of time, so it is important to be patient with yourself.
