Goat Milk Ice Cream

Summer is surprisingly and lamentably short on good holidays. After the Fourth of July, it's a long, slow, hot crawl until Labor Day-that is, until you remember National Ice Cream Month, which is ongoing throughout July.

Even the most devoted ice cream fan, however, occasionally wants something that's not just plain vanilla. That's why we've gotten addicted recently to LaLoo's Goat's Milk Ice Cream, produced in California's bucolic Sonoma County from natural ingredients, premium flavorings, and (you guessed it) goat's milk-a step away from the ordinary that came about when company founder Laura Howard wanted to go on a yoga-inspired diet that disallowed cow's milk. She couldn't give up ice cream, though, so she started making her own from goat's milk. What at first seemed like a sweet tooth's caprice soon turned into a way of life.

Not only is her product lower in fat and calories than traditional ice cream, but the goat's milk also adds a slight chèvre-like tang to such flavors as Black Mission Fig, spiced Molasses Tipsycake, and Strawberry Darling. The latter is swirled with reduced balsamic-a classic combination that seemed jarring at first in a frozen treat, but soon had us licking the spoon. Our hands-down favorite, however, is the Deep Chocolate, which tastes a lot like a yummy sour cream ganache. The prettily packaged pints have been runaway hits at natural-foods stores in California, and they've recently expanded to Eastern markets as well.

Ice cream that's lower in calories, suitable for the lactose intolerant, and available in cool, tangy, intriguing flavors? Sounds like a reason to declare a holiday to us.
