Scottish Terriers have Big Personalities
I guess you can say that a Scottish Terrier is a BIG dog in a small package. Now you may be thinking this is a silly statement since the wee Scottie Dog merely stands a puny 10 inches tall.
Well, let me explain a few things about a Scottie.
Did you know that Scottish Terriers were bred for hunting of Fox and Badgers? Now the larger dogs actually did the chasing down of the critter, since the Scottie rode on the horse with the hunter, they are not good distance runners. When the fox reached their den or hole, the Scottie was let down and released. Being only 10 inches tall now becomes quite an asset as the Scottie dog just charged right in and made the final kill. Sounds pretty ferocious, but really they aren't.

These two handsome bearded lads are my boys, Duncan McDuff and Brodie Lochen.
One of the other fun things we Scottie owners get to do is pick out a really awesome Scottish name for our pups. By doing so we tend to learn a lot about the history of Scotland. We thought about naming our new puppy MacBeth until we learned he had cowardly murdered King Duncan. Yikes! We quickly changed our mind. So we chose Brodie, which suits him quite well.

Scottish Terrier Temperament
They say pictures are worth a thousand words.... than this one should tell the whole story.
Duncan and Brodie put up with our total silliness on a daily basis. I have found that Scottie Dogs are generally easy going, as long as they are treated with kindness and respect. Which is the case with all breeds or any pet for that matter. Scotties are known to be quite independent and a bit head strung. They do things on their own terms and only when they feel like it. A Scottie does need training and direction or they can easily dominate the household. They suffer from a "Napoleon Complex".
They enjoy a good chase and will dash off in the speed of light after a bunny, chipmunk or any other animal which dare to enter their yard. For this reason, it is imperative to keep your Scottie on a lease or contained within a fenced in yard. Some of the animals my Scotties have chased off our property include cats, other dogs, chipmunks, squirrels, foxes, racoons, a skunk (that was a stinky experience), groundhogs, birds, and an emu. Yeah, that is what I said. I know it was a really strange sight to see when I looked out my kitchen window. Apparently, one got loose and somehow found his little old way into our yard, only to be confronted by a barking bearded dwarf.
A few more facts, Scotties tend to be territorial, very alert, quick moving and feisty, perhaps even more so than other terrier breeds. The breed is known to be independent and self-assured, playful, intelligent and has been nicknamed the 'Diehard' because of its rugged nature and endless determination.

The Scottish Terrier Personality
Big-Big-Big
When you come to visit us, you are greeted enthusiastically by two black bearded dwarfs. Now be forewarned there may be some high jumping going on, they can usually spring about 3 feet off the ground. You would think they have a spring surgically implanted in their hind quarters. It is hard to contain their excitement since they really love people.
Once inside you can expect many toys, balls and bones piling up at your feet. They are merely presenting you with all the things they love. Kind of a sharing gesture, they only want to make sure you are completely comfortable. Now my younger guy may begin to make some grunting noise and push his ball right onto your foot all while he maintains perfect eye contact. Guess you know exactly what he wants. Yep, he is a ball addict.
You are going to have to throw it for him or he will never leave you alone. Oh, yeah he comes right back in two seconds and drops it again at your feet, sitting quietly like a perfect little angel waiting and watching your every move.
Ahhh! Don't worry Brodie will find something else to do or head over to his window with Duncan to keep an eye on the neighborhood. One last thing, before you get up better check your feet you may have a friend or two sleeping on them.

Scottie Dogs are unbelievable WATCH DOGS. They don't miss a trick on anything happening on their turf. They'll alert you of any and all activity outside of your home. Now it could just be a squirrel, chipmunk or your neighbors cat but needless to say... you will be warned.The deep bark which is emitted from the wee bearded fellow does NOT sound like a small guy at all. My Scotties "BIG DOG BARK" have sent many UPS men nervously scurrying back to the safety of their little brown truck.
In this picture, I think they are contemplating their strategy. They spend countless hours on that chair together waiting for something to happen outside.

Update as of 4/12/12
Duncan crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 26th 2012 at the young age of 9. It was very unexpected and quick and left us with a huge gaping hole in our hearts. He died in my arms at the Vet ER, as I held him, he looked me straight in the eyes and suddenly slipped away.We were told that night that he had a heart tumor and his prognosis was extremely poor but no one expected him to die that night. However, it may have been a blessing.
It has been hard for my family and I to deal with his loss, but we are so thankful that he did not suffer. I think I understand now why he looked at me like that. It was to say I love you and goodbye. And I am so grateful for the 9 years of happiness he brought to my family and I.
Brodie, his 1 1/2 year old brother misses him terribly and has just recently stopped looking for him. The other day, I called our breeder and asked to be put on their waiting list for another black Scottie, male of course. So now we wait. I will keep you posted.
Thanks so much for visiting this lens. I am so proud of my both of my boys, especially Duncan. He was truly an exceptional Dog and will be in my heart forever. :)
