A Scottish Christmas - Music of Scotland

Ranked #3,007 in Music, #83,278 overall | Donates to Guitars for Vets

Kilts, Fiddles, Dulcimers and Bagpipes

Scottish music is Celtic Music, but to me the music of Scotland reminds me of my ancestors, and Christmas makes memories more vivid.

May I take a short moment to share just a wee bit of my heritage? Then on we will go to look at this wonderful collection of music.

My grandmother came over on a ship with her brother and sister shortly after her youngest sister passed away from Leukemia. Her father was already in America getting settled in a home and business before bringing his family to join him. I have copies of the letters written back and forth between my great-grandfather and great-grandmother...heartbreaking letters...as father could not be there to see his daughter before she passed away and mother was left to deal with the passing. Then my great-grandmother made all the arrangements of moving to American, packed up the remaining children (including my grandmother), got on a ship, and come to America through Ellis Island. Can you imagine? When I feel overwhelmed I think of this...her courage...but it is not sadness that I want to focus on here, it is music.

But I sense myself getting distracted once again..by food!

Scotch Shortbread is a tradition at Christmas, passed down from my Grandmother. She was 12 when she came over from Scotland, so she lost most of her Scottish accent, but her sister and brother and the woman he married, also from Scotland, never lost their Scottish brogue. It was a familiar sound at Christmas gatherings and visits. I miss it now, as years have taken them on to a grander place. Their memories are enough for now to keep a smile on my face.

But you are here for Scottish music, aren't you? So let's move on from my sentimental thoughts about family and Scotland, and see what we have for you.

Here's what people are saying about A Scottish Christmas

CBS-TV said that the music is "Ancient and infectious...one of the best selling CDs of the season and so compelling no matter what the listener's ancestry." So even if you aren't Scottish, you should enjoy this musical treat!

Here is the "Product Description" with a smattering of my 2 cents added in here and there:

With this album, CD, MP3 download, whatever your choice may be, you'll enjoy traditional Scottish carols, wassail tunes, strathspeys and reels for the celebration of Christmas, Hogmanay, and seeing in the New Year.

Featuring Bonnie Rideout on Scottish fiddle, Al Petteway on guitar & cittern, Maggie Sansone on hammered dulcimer, Eric Rigler (the piper on "Braveheart" soundtrack) on Highland bagpipes, Scottish smallpipes & Uilleann pipes, with Abby cello and percussion.

"A Scottish Christmas" in now a national touring ensemble and this CD recording captures all the sounds and magic of the stage show with performances on Scottish fiddle, viola, hammered dulcimer, guitar, pipes and drums. It was featured on CBS-TV's Sunday Morning and made The New York Times "Top 10 Holiday Picks" and was featured on both NPR's "Performance Today" and "The Thistle & Shamrock". It was a WAMMI! winner (Washington Area Musicians Association).

Hear the the sound of Eric Rigler who was the piper on Mel Gibson's "Braveheart". and many other talents, including music written by Scotland's Greatest Poet Robert Burns .

Eilean Donan Castle in Winter

A little visual break from the album/cd cover

I thought you'd be a little tired of looking at the album cover, which isn't quite as exciting as the music within....so here's a picture of Eilean Donan Castle in the Higlands of Scotland You can click the link for more information about this pretty art print.

I'm married to a Scot and we lived in Scotland for several years when our ons were young. Sadly they lost the accent very quickly when we moved back to England.

I love Celtic music, too. My four grandparents were born in Ireland, though my paternal grandfather's family moved to Glascow, Scotland, when he was a baby. He rolled his r's with the best of them! All immigrated to Boston in the early 1900's.
Great lens! I love your musical choices!

Isn't the rrrrrrrrollin or the r's the most wonderful thing to hear? I miss it so much. Isn't it funny they immigrated to Boston...that is where my Scottish grandmother lived, too...about 15 minutes outside off Rt 109 with my grandfather. We vacationed there every summer.
