Meet the Scottish Deerhound, a friendly gentle giant of a dog

The Scottish Deerhound looks a bit like a Greyhound in form with long, wiry hair, though they are larger in bone and build. They are very friendly dogs that want to please their owners, and need a lot of exercise, especially when young.

Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, a Scottish Deerhound won "Best in Show" at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2011, "crowned" by Judge Paolo Dondina. Hickory's handler was Angela Lloyd, and it was announced after the show that Hickory would retire to Flint Hill, Va., where she lives on a farm with breeders Dr. R. Scott and Cecilia L. Dove.

According to fellow Squidoo lensmaster, Susan, a/k/a BuckHawk, owner of an animal rescue by the same name, Scottish Deerhounds are among the "gentle giants" because of their wonderful dispositions.

    Love your site. I really hadn't know about Deerhounds before. Your site gave me a great feeling for the breed. I know that the giant breeds are very susceptible to canine osteosarcoma. My Standard Poodle Nikki was diagnosed with the disease and I put up a site dedicated to therapies: conventional, alternative and integrative that may be of interest to your readers.     Wonderful job of presenting this breed. They are absolutely magnificent dogs and look even better in person. To see one run at full speed across a field is amazing! I loved your description of their couch potato preferences! As the SquidAngel for Dogs, just had to drop some Angel Dust! All of us a BuckHawk Center thank you!

    Terrific page. You sure did a lot of work. I added this to my Waco's page. These are gorgeous dogs. I met a couple at the Houston show about two years ago.

    Beautiful dogs! I was going to comment how much it looks like the Irish Wolfhound, then read above that they are indeed closely related. Have never encountered one of these, but I knew a family with Irish wolfhounds and they were wonderful dogs, soft and daft as brushes!!
