Scottish Terrier Puppies
Are you thinking about adding a Scottish Terrier Puppy to your family?
Consider these facts before choosing a Scottish Terrier Puppy. Always understand the personality traits of any dog breed before making a decision. Too many dogs end up in shelters because the owners really did not do their homework to understand the characteristics of the dog breed they adopted or purchased. Deciding to add any new pet to your family is a life long decision and should never be taken lightly. By taking the time to read this, you are taking the first step in being a responsible pet owner.
A Scottish Terrier is like a fine Single Malt Scotch, its an acquired taste.
A Scottie puppy may not be the right dog for every family and one should carefully consider the Scottie's distinctive traits before adopting or purchasing one. If you are looking for a dog who will follow every command, sit perfectly by your side and who rarely thinks on his own, then a Scottie may not be the dog for you.
Scotties are terriers, they are feisty, strong, stubborn, and totally independent.
They are a big dog in a small package, very brave and confident and will not back down to anything. A Scottie is not a push button dog like poodles or labs, and for these reasons alone is why I would never own any other breed of dog.
It's kinda like serving caviar to a person who prefers hotdogs.
Not that there is anything wrong with hotdogs, of course. So if you prefer more of a challenge and a bit of spice, then a Scottish Terrier may be just the right dog for you.

What to Expect When Your Expecting a Scottish Terrier Puppy
When your little bundle of joy finally arrives, you will not be able to stop smiling as you look into the eyes of your wee Scottish Terrier Puppy. You can expect an 8 week old Scottish Terrier Puppy to weigh about 4-5 pounds and they truly are the sweetest little thing you will ever set your eyes on. They start out tiny, but really grow quite quickly. They will out grow their baby collars and harnesses in a few weeks. So buying 2 sizes right off the bat is recommended. Remember when they are full grown they will be in the vicinity of 19 to 24 pounds.
Don't worry their ears are not broken.
The Scottie Puppies ears will not be standing erect right away. This will take some time. At one point your Scottish Terrier Puppy may have one ear standing straight up and the other one bent forward, sort of looks a bit cock-eyed. Eventually he/she will learn to hold those ears at perfect attention.
You may notice some pearly whites on your carpet or floor.
Don't worry they are just loosing those baby teeth to make room for their big adult teeth. And trust me, these adult teeth are big. An adult Scottish Terriers teeth are almost the size of German Shepherd. Amazing but true!

Constant Supervision
You will need to keep a vigilant eye on this little rascal 24/7. Start the puppy training as soon as you get home. I have listed some of the equipment you will need to help your puppy make a smooth transition into his new family.

Scottish Terrier Names
Ahhhh the joy of naming your Scottie Puppy! This so so fun and I have included a fun list of Scottish related names to help you get started on your search for the perfect name.
Female Scottish Terrier Names
Agnes, Aggie, Maggie, Abby, Abbie, Amie, Annabelle, Bailey, Barney, Blair, Bonnie, Daisy, Fiona, Ginny, Kayleigh, Kenzie, Mackenzie, Maddie, Maggie, Maisie, May, Megan, Molly, Morag, Nessie, Peyton, Skye, Taffy
Male Scottish Terrier Names
Alistair, Andrew, Angus, Archibald, Artie, Blake, Baxter, Callum, Cameron, Campbell, Charlie, Clyde, Dougal, Duncan, Flanigan, Finnegan, Fraser, Gordon, Graham, Haggis, Hamish, Hector, Jock, Lewis, Logan, Mac, MacIntosh, Malcolm, McGregor, Murdoch, Oscar, Piper, Riley, Robbie, Sandy, Seamus, Simon, Skye, Wallace
Our oldest Scottie is named Duncan McDuff. Duncan is a more popular Scottie name, but it suits him so well. It means brown warrior! And trust me Duncan is one tough dog. Our youngest Scottie is named Brodie Lochen. Brodie is a clan name and we thought is was trendy and cute. Which suits him well. He is absolutely NOT a warrior, that is for sure. Lochen was the name of his mother and McDuff was the name of Duncan's Fathers. I like to give them two names. It just doesn't seem right to give the noble Scottie Dog only one.

Crate Training the Scottie Puppy
Crate Training
I cannot stress enough the value of using a Crate. A dog naturally feels safe and secure inside of his den. A puppy is taught by his mother not to go to the bathroom where they sleep. If your puppy was purchased from a reputable breeder, your Scottie Puppy was with him right up until the time he is ready to move to his new home. Did you know that the mother begins training on her pups right away. Some of the etiquette she teaches her pups is invaluable to their growing into a wonderful dog. If a puppy is taken away too soon from his mom, the puppy can suffer many behavioral or psychological issues.
Back to Crates: There a few rules to go along with the use of a crate to make it your Scotties favorite place to nap and rest.
Get the right size crate
Purchase a crate for the size your puppy will grow into, you will be able to section it off to make the area smaller to avoid the puppy from going to the bathroom in one corner and sleeping in another. Many crates will come with a divider panel so you can section it off. Otherwise, you can construe something with the use of cardboard secured inside the crate. You can view the crates I have selected and the proper size for a Scottish Terrier.
Never force your Scottie to go into the crate.
This is supposed to be a happy place and never a place used for punishment.
Use a treat or a toy to lure them into their crate. You can toss something they really love inside and most likely they will follow the item right into their crate. Do this several times without closing the door. So the puppy realizes that he can come and go. Eventually you will close the door for short periods of time so he can adjust to being inside the crate with the door closed.
Do not put bedding into the crate until your puppy is potty trained.
This is a mistake I constantly make. Feeling sorry for the little fellow and thinking he should have a soft place to sleep. You do notice that many time dogs just lay on the hard floor. They really do not seem to mind, there is plenty of time to introduce a Comfy Crate Pillow for them when they grow up a little. The problem is that they will soil the bedding and squish it up and shove it to the back to lay on the bottom of the crate.
Wee Wee Pads
I have used them in the past and truly wish I didn't. I thought it could possibly be the best of both worlds. My puppy came right in the middle of winter and of course during one of our worst winters. The snow just kept falling and falling. Every time I took the little guy out, he shivered and did not like walking on the cold snow. So I broke in and got the
. While he did use them, he also used my carpet, his crate pad, our daughters bed and anything soft. He was really not getting the fact that we wanted him only to go potty on the wee pads. I think he thought, okay I can do my business anywhere in this house. The other problem is that many times they go on the pad, but kinda half on and half off. I invested in some cheap vinyl flooring to put down on my hardwood floor with the wee pad on top to help protect my floor. This did help protect my floors and the vinyl was easy to clean. But even so, changing those pads became a job which no one in the family seemed to want to partake in.
When spring finally came to Pennsylvania, it was time to transition him to the great outdoors.
Luckily, with a bit of determination I was able to move his potty to the outside of my house and get rid of those pads once and for all. I really do not like to down play a product like wee pads because maybe it does work for certain situations. For me, I know that it really is not something which works. I guess the bottom line is, there really are no shortcuts in life.

The Colors of the Scottish Terrier
The Scottish Terrier comes in MANY different colors.
Black Brindle, Black, Brindle, Wheaten ,Silver Brindle. Red Brindle. The colors vary from dark gray to blue-black. Brindle is actually the original color of the breed. Most people that have not had a Scottish Terrier would think they are looking at a black dog, when in fact they are actually looking at a black brindle. The lighter colors and reds are more rare. Black or black/brindle is the most common and is traditionally what comes to mind when we think of a Scottish Terrier.
Grooming is an additional cost one must consider when adding a Scottie to your family.
Scotties need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. You can learn to this yourself. I personally prefer to take my Scotties to a professional groomer.
The Groomer will wash them, strip their coat and trim them into a beautiful Scottish Terrier cut. They also trim their nails and so much more. The cost can be anywhere from $30 to $50, depending on your location.

A Soft Mesh Dog Harness is the way to go.
Do expect barking
Scottish Terriers are excellent watch dogs and will keep an eye out on any intruder which includes squirrels, cats and anything or anyone who enters their property. The Scottie Dog does not have a yippy bark, it is a deep big dog bark. Be forewarned that a Scottie is a daring dog, and will not back down from any other animal. Size really does not matter. The Scottie is a big dog packed in a small package. Its nickname brave heart explains it all. Therefore a fenced in yard is the best answer to keep them safe. Do not trust a Scottie off of lease. While they really want to be good and listen, they have a very short attention span and will dart off after any critter which catches their eye. They really can't help themselves, its their instinct which just takes over. They are breed to be hunters.
