Creating a Website for your Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, or Girl Scout Troop

Ranked #868 in Culture & Society, #21,535 overall

Free Boy Scout Troop Website, Free Cub Scout Pack Website, Free Girl Scout Troop Website

As a Scout leader, one of the things we want to do is communicate to our Pack or Troop consistently and without much effort. Email has become the great communication method, and more recently the growth of websites has become more popular.

The problem is, as scout leaders, we don't have a lot of money to spend on a website, as we would rather spend it on the kids, and keeping a website up is not something easily done.

As cub scout, boy scout, and girl scout leaders we want the website to be secure, create a calendar, display pictures of past events, act as a repository of information, and be easy to use.

Below you will find some options to create websites, some free, some not free. Some easy to use, some you'll need to work at. But keeping the communication lines open with your Cub Scout Pack, Girl Scout Troop, or Boy Scout Troop keeps the scouts moving forward.

If you don't find something useful below, a full list of is available in the Google Directory: http://www.google.com/Top/Recreation/Scouting/Software/

Scoutlander

The Best Place to Land Your Scout's Website

type=textIn 2010, our Cub Scout Pack decided it needed to get with it and create a website where we could put up pictures, keep a calendar, and dimeminate information. By mear luck, we landed on Scoutlander when I saw a couple of sites linking to my Cub Scout Skits page here on Squidoo.

Scoutlander as of August 2010 is FREE to use and offers everything we wanted. A public place where we could advertise our Cub Scout Pack, and a private section to keep pack information. Scoutlander provides a calendar and automatic emails 48 hours a head of an event. We can make pages about hiking, the pinewood derby, crossover, and popcorn sales. We can post pictures and send emails. For a free system it offers a lot of useful tools. The pages are freeform, offering a lot of flexibility and are very intuitive to use if your use to Microsoft Word. One downside of Scoutlander is that there is only one template.

You can even create a website url. To see more, check out our Cub Scout Pack 110 in North West Naperville website.

Yahoo! Groups or Google Sites

type=textA couple more places to put up a FREE Girl Scout or Boy Scout Troop Website is Yahoo! Groups or Google Sites.

Both are very similar in that they offer public and private sections of the website controlled by the web administrator. They offer page creation, calendar functions, and email capabilities. The downside of these is they are free form and don't offer too many templates to get started. Your users will need to be somewhat website literate to create and edit pages.

You can visit the Cupertino's Cub Scout Pack 415 Yahoo! Group or the Chatham County Girl Scouts on Google Sites

PackWeb Cub Scout Websites

type=textA paid site is PackWeb which costs 99.95 plus a one-time setup fee. Packweb has a calendar and allows you to create. Here are some examples of Packweb sites.

Terapad Scout Websites

type=textIn searching for scout websites, I also came across the following Free site: ScoutsWebsite.Net.

The websites are powered by Terapad. These seem a little more professional looking to the eye and come with the same common features, secure pages, calendars and pictures. The sites also come with a blog, a shop, and the ability to accept donations.

I wasn't able to find an example of a Scout Website on Terapad.

PacksOnline - Shutdown in 2010

type=textPacksOnline is a site that was built specifically for Cub Scout Pack Websites for a fee of $150 per year. However, Packsonline abrubtly stopped service in 2010 leaving a bunch of Cub Scout Packs scrambling to find an alternative.

These sites are not Free, but they also do the job

I never thought of creating a scout website before when I was a cab scout. Anyway, this lens will help those who need to disseminate info about their scout. Thanks for sharing these great resources. :)

I wish I'd known about Scoutlander before I started our Pack blog. However, so far, I do love Blogger. Here's our Pack blog if you'd like to visit us! http://www.pack98scouts.blogspot.com

We have created our Pack website on google sites and it works out great with calendar, photos(picasa) and forms (google docs). We have even created a leaders only section where we can keep our rosters etc. http://www.omahapack396.com

Just wanted to let you know the Terapad Scout Websites is only free for 30 days, after that there is a fee. They have different levels for the fee, from $5/mo and above. It isn't that expensive but thought people might want to know.

Have a scoutlander account. The only thing I have found is if you want to change administrators, they will not answer. Have tried twice to mail them and have not gotten a response yet.

They are now charging. I know this because my cub scout is using there sight since last year and they have been sending us notifications about the change. Right now it is on an honesty basis and what you think it is worth, however, the writing is on the wall for this site to be charge like all the others.

Give http://CoolCubs.com a try. $6.99/mo, and your cub scout pack website almost builds itself. Very customizable with free-form pages.
