How to make a scrabble tile pendant

A unique DIY creative craft & great gift!

Supplies Needed:

- Scrabble tiles
- Decorative papers: Japanese Chiyogami paper
- 6-10mm Jump rings or small Aanraku bails
- Exacto / utility knife
- Popsicle sticks
- Chain or black cording for necklace
- Drill & 1/16 bit (optional depending on bail)
- Crafting glue (UHU stick, Mod Podge,)
- Industrial type glue (crazy/super glue or epoxy)
- Pin (optional depending on choice of bail)
- Nail file (optional)
- Finishing resin: Envirotex or Diamond Glaze

Before I knew where to find small silver Aanraku jewelry bails (see eBay module below), I used a 1/16th drill bit and drill a hole right through my scrabble tile game piece. Aiming for center of the letter, about 3-5 mm from top edge of tile.

Using decorative papers, Japanese chiyogami papers (see eBay module below) seem to be quite popular...cut out a square measuring the same size as game piece.

I do this by tracing edges of tile with exacto knife while it's on top of paper.
Step by Step: put tile on paper, press down firmly with fingers, and trace/cut edges with sharp utility knife.

Next, glue decorative paper on to plain side/back of tile, keeping the scrabble letter exposed on reverse side for authentication & decorative purposes.
Some crafters use Mod Podge, I find a glue stick works just fine.

Trim any paper overage around edges with utility knife again for neatness. If need be (although I've never needed to) you can gently file paper's edges with a metal or nail file (optional).

At this point you could ink/chalk/glitter edges for unique look. If you have used the drill...feel for impression of hole through paper and poke paper side inwards through the drilled hole with a straight pin. Do NOT drill with paper on (it tears at paper edges making an untidy finish).

If you choose small silver Aanraku bails, the drill, pin and hole are not necessary. Simply add a couple of drops of crazy/super glue to the flat back of the silver bail and carefully place in the center of the letter side of tile as shown in picture below.

Optional pre-resin sealing: Sealing the paper before the resin coat is applied is totally optional. (I don't seal mine)

Should you choose to seal your decorative paper before adding resin, you can do so with a paint brush and Mod Podge. Allow plenty of drying time.

Resin: Some crafters use Diamond Glaze, I personally have access to a 2 step resin called Envirotex (see eBay module below).

I use a Popsicle stick to mix throughly and spread evenly over scrabble tile. If resin spills over edges wipe off excess with Popsicle stick or file edges smooth if need be. (again, I've never had spillage or rough edges - it's rare)

CAREFUL when spreading resin near drilled hole, if you are not careful it will drip into hole, clogging space for jump ring and leaking out backside.

TIP: to remove any air bubbles in resin use a drinking straw and lightly blow on surface area. Work in as dust free an area as possible, I find covering resin coated tile with a glass while it dries is helpful.

Envirotex takes approx 48+ hrs to dry, I've heard Diamond glaze dries faster; when papered surface dries completely, add jump ring or silver Aanraku bail. I find rings from 6mm to 10mm will work just fine. (no smaller no larger)

Tip: slide 2 ends of jump ring into drilled part of scrabble tile for finished look and added security it won't come apart. Or you can solder ends if tools available.

Small silver and gold toned Aanraku bails are easily found on the internet (see eBay module below). Affix these with a strong epoxy glue, crazy glue or E6000. I just happen to have jump rings...so that's what I use.

Add black cording, silver chain or ribbon through the jump ring to finish your scrabble tile pendant off into a charming necklace. Great as a gift or for resell!

I want your opinion....

Do you think you have to be artistic to complete a craft?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, I think there are artsy people and there are NOT artsy people...

blue22d says:

Crafts of any kind are so much fun and it brings out our creativity. It is so relaxing to do crafts. I crochet some and have known to do watercolors. I love your tiles.

StephenC says:

You need to be handy and have an eye for what looks good. If that's artsy, then I'd say yes. But then, art is in the eye of the beholder, right? There has to be something intrinsic to feel the need to create something. Then do it well. If there are people who are not like that, then I would have to say, yes!

Scrapbook Delights says:

Personally,I think Everyone can create crafts. how ever an artist who has chosen to study art may have a easier time at it. Most stuff just comes naturally for me. Its like I just know it. But I truly believe that everyone has it in them to create. Though when in school I did get irritated with a girl who chose graphic design because "she thought it would be easy." AS If those of it who chose it were stupid. She dropped after the first drawing class. It is not easy, its a passion.

Rashell says:

not to complete a craft. yes to complete art.

Sarunas says:

In my opinion you must to have some what of an eye for what looks great. :)

jpoet says:

I think you have to be some what artisitic to complete a craft.

KimDeanArt says:

YOu either have it or your dont. Love your pendents!
Kim

julcal says:

I do think you need to have somewhat of an eye for what looks good.

gcarone says:

Depends on the job: I am doing a job that requires many forms of arts and that is why I love it.

Cajean says:

I don't think you have to be especially artistic to follow easy directions like yours, but to go on from there and make it your own..aha, that's the artsy part! Is that a "Yes"? ;-)

I disagree, you've shown me how to, now I know I can do this...

2Eklectik says:

I think anyone can start a craft & complete it but everyone will love doing it.

filipinotshirts says:

a good eye helps, but with good instructions everything should turn out right.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

...but the outcome might be different if I were artsy!

Ahmady says:

Not with good instructions--when I went to art school, the people who thought they couldn't draw were actually quite good! Your lens is really nice and I love your idea, but I love Scrabble too much to do that to a tile!! I like the bottle cap and steampunk jewelry..Good luck!

Saachi says:

It would help, but it is not always necessary for craft. I truly enjoyed spending time reading your lens. A vry good one! I rate it at 5star !! Thanks again.

Saachi says:

It would help, but it is not always necessary.. I truly enjoyed reading your lens. Thank you! 5Star!

Intuitive says:

No...I think the line between arts and crafts is blurring more and more all the time. And thank goodness! I have a degree in art but came from a crafty upbringing. Creativity is creativity. Period.

lynic141257 says:

I find as long as I follow Directions I'm fine.

paperfacets says:

Artistic is different than completing a project. There is some things required for any art craft. Anyone who can get A grades can do beautiful crafts, because who know what is required, you take time to be careful and thorough, and last you have some interest in the project.

Whoa, but if a person goes beyond project boundaries then he/she has gone into the artistic.

Tipi says:

This looks easy and fun!
