Black Berry Paper's Historic Home

Blackberry Paper is located at 90 North Main Street in Layton, Utah.

When we began looking for a place to start our business, we had no idea we'd end up in a building with so much interesting history! We discovered that it was built on land that was originally patented in 1875. In 1907, Dr. Walter Whitlock came to the Layton area and, in an effort to encourage him to stay, Rufus Adams arranged for the lot and built an office for the doctor. During his lease, Dr. Whitlock performed major surgery, sometimes assisted by the school principal, in his small clinic!

The next occupant was Jack (Blackjack) Smith, who operated a cafÈ. Two barbers were the next tenants: Henry Smedley, probably Layton's first licensed barber, rented the shop for a few months and then moved to South Main. John (Jack) Sandall took over the location and offered haircuts for 35 cents, and shaves for 15 cents.

A German shoemaker next occupied 90 North Main, followed by a trading post, and an electrician. George Evans then opened a donut and malted milk shop. In 1949, the building became the"Square Deal CafÈ", better known as "Little Joe's", until 1984. Their hamburgers were famous.

In 2005, we began operation of Blackberry Paper, a yummy little scrapbooking store. 98 years of commerce at 90 North Main!

A thought on scrapbooking

It's ironic; what makes a creative scrapbooking business unique and attractive to entrepreneurs seeking a work-at-home venture is also what makes it so incredibly challenging. After all, there are no definitive "rules" when it comes to pricing your scrapbook creations or determining where and how to advertise your services.
