Scrapbooking is a Lifestyle!
What is Scrapbooking?
Let's start with the basics!!
Scrapbooking in it's most basic form, is compiling photos and memorobilia into a book form. Modern scrapbooking spans a continuum from archival to artistic. Some scrapbookers love to play with scissors and glue, and create all paper layouts. Some scrapbookers love to play on the computer and create all digital layouts, and still others create pages using a "hybrid" of digital techniques and traditional paper techniques.
Each scrapbooker needs to decide how they wish to balance the preservation of their photos and memorabilia (archival) with the artistic part of scrapbooking. I tend to be a more "simple" scrapbooker. My pages focus on my photos and journaling, with a few fun accents to give it the artistic touch.
All you really need to get started are your photos, some cardstock, photo-safe adhesive, scissors and a pen. The most basic layouts consist of cropping (or cutting) your photos to bring the focus to the subject, mounting them on the page, and journaling (writing) about them. From this basic beginning, you can take scrapbooking almost anywhere - even outside of traditional albums!
My favorite basic tools
You need a trimmer, scissors, adhesive, and pens before you start any scrapbook project - here are my favorite brands.

Books to live your Scrapbooking Lifestyle!
The Big Picture... Scrapbook Your Life and a Whole Lot More
This book changed my Scrapbooking Lifestyle. I went from being paralyzed because I "MUST" scrapbook in chronological order, to the freedom of scrapbooking the photos I love. I have scrapbooked more pages since reading this book 18 months ago, than I had in the 5 YEARS prior.
Creative Sketches for Scrapbooking
The basic building blocks for planning layouts. Sketches help me visualize what I can do with the photos I have.
Creative Sketches, Vol. 2
Her 2nd volume is better organized than the first - with all new sketches!
The Best of Becky Higgins' Sketches
Although the sketches are recycled from her previous volumes, the page ideas from the sketches are all new.
Scrapbook Play (Simple Scrapbooks)
OK - I have to admit - I haven't actually seen this one yet - but I've put it here on the excellent recommendation of my friend Cara.
Magazines to live your Scrapbooking Lifestyle
Creating Keepsakes
The grandmama of the scrapbook magazines. Even though it's stuffed with ads, and some pages are WAY overdone for my tastes, page for page, I find more layouts to cut out and add to my idea journal than from any other mag.
Scrapbooks Etc. (1-year)
Better Homes & Garden's Scrapbook Mag. I think this one just keeps improving.
Tell me what you think!
This lens is a work in progress, but I'd love your feedback!
