Scrumpy Cider

Scrumpy, The King of the Cider World

Scrumpy could possibly be described as the puritan's form of cider. There is no additional water, sugar, nor any form of artificial preservatives added. It is generally made from the whole apples, as opposed to pre-pressed juice, and is often drunk with pieces of the apples in the glass. Beware, however - some varieties of scrumpy can have an alcohol content of as much as 15%, which is more than three times that of the average beer!

Who Invented Scrumpy?

Do we know when and where it was first produced?

The word "scrumpy" is believed to have originated from the ancient word "scrimp," which basically referred to an apple which was past its best and beginning to decay. It is therefore not difficult to relate to the point of origin of the word, as cider in general is often made from those apples which have already fallen off the trees of their own volition. If we are to look at when and where production first started, however, matters are not quite so cut and dried.

Cider production in general is known to have taken place in the Middle East in late Biblical times but the first records of production in England are not until the beginning of the 13th century. It is partly for this reason that the technique is believed to have been introduced to England by the Normans following their conquest of the country, as production had already been taking place in Normandy, France for some time.

Have You Ever Made Your Own Cider or Scrumpy?

Why not give it a go at home?

It is a sad reflection of modern times that the price of a pint of scrumpy or cider in general is increasing all the time and reaching ridiculous levels. Perhaps it is a Government ploy to cut down on drunkenness by ensuring very few people can afford to drink enough of it to become intoxicated???

Scrumpy, however, is something that anyone can easily make at home for a tiny fraction of the price that they would pay for it in a pub or supermarket, providing they have the required knowledge. That is where this fantastic book comes in, currently available on Amazon at a substantial discount. How many pints of cider would you get for this price? Two, if you were very lucky, I should imagine! So just think what a great investment this is and how much money you, as a cider drinker, can soon be saving every day!

Organic Scrumpy

The big "O" word we are all hearing so much more about

It is a fact of modern life that the word, "organic," is featuring more and more in articles relating to food and drink. This is more than anything a result of people wakening up to the dangers of genetically modified crops, pesticides and a whole host of artificial interferences in the foodstuffs we consume. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so!

By its very definition, all scrumpy should of course be organic, made from basic fresh apple ingredients as it is. The sad reality these days, however, is that many of the trees which these apples come from will have been treated with pesticides and who knows what else. So other than growing your own apples and making your own scrumpy, how can you find some that is truly organic?

One such way is to simply perform a web search for organic scrumpy producers in your country/locale. Below is a link to start you off:

I love cider, especially homebrewed cider. But I have never heard of scrumpy before. I am really going to need to try this stuff.

It's super easy. Crush and press the apples. Bottle the juice and leave open to air on the kitchen counter. Stand back and watch chemistry convert C6H12O6 into ethanol. I add tiny amts of sugar to prolong fermentation and inc alcohol. Then decant to remove some sludge. Dry, still, apple-y and yummy. BandonScrumpy.com
