Review of ScubaPro Computers

Visit any dive related board or chat room and you will quickly notice one of the hot recurring topics is "are dive tables such as the PADI Recreational Dive Planner safer than Computers."

The passions run high on both sides of the argument. It is my belief as a passionate diver and Instructor that the RDP is certainly more conservative and therefore, if used correctly, may be safer. There are two problems with the tables 1. almost no one remembers how to use them and 2. they are too conservative for most experienced divers.

If you are going to be doing serious diving you will likely want to add a computer to you collection of dive gear.

While I discuss ScubaPro/Uwatec computers here the basic styles apply to many other brands. What I particularly like about Uwatec is the warrantee and service. We have very good experiences with repairs and upgrading if repairs cannot be made.

Aladin Prime

The Aladin is what is affectionately known in the industry as a hockey puck computer. Hockey puck computers in general and the Aladin in particular are designed for recreational divers looking for basic time, depth and no decompression time left.

With the Aladin you can grow into the other features including Nitrox setting in 1% increments, ppO2 (partial pressure of oxygen) settings. logbook, clock function and more.

The Aldin is easy to use and understand most recreational divers. The advanced functions are accessed through two buttons and can take some practice to be proficient.

The Aladin and its slightly more technical big brother the Aladin TEC 2G come as a wrist mount or part of a two gauge console or with two gauges and a compass.

Who should use this computer - Beginner to advanced who do not mind monitoring there own air use and consumption.

Smart Com

The Smart Com is the next step in dive computers. It is air integrated so the computer can track you air usage. It monitors breathing efficiency and usage as well as the basic computer functions. It can be downloaded to a desktop with infrared technology.

The console also comes with a built in compass and a quick disconnect hose so that you can take the computer with you when you are done diving for the day.

Who should use this computer - Beginner to advance who like the convenience of air consumption monitor and more warnings. This computer also has feature to improve your air use by warning you when you are over breathing.

Galileo Sol

The Galileo Sol is the ultimate in dive computers. It has heart rate monitor, 3 gas capability, digital compass with position memory, 4,350 psi capability, gas integrated through transmitter and much more. It has infrared interface to download software upgrades.

This computer is designed for divers who love technology or push to the limits of recreational diving and beyond.

The Terra some of the features of the sol but is not gas integrated. Heart rate monitor and three gas program can be added as upgrades at purchase or after market.

This computer is for the advanced diver who needs the ability to monitor multiple gases and are pushing limits or recreational diving. It is also greak for you techno geeks who love tech toys.
