An serious understatement unquestionably, be it might
To say that Polymer Clay should be a sculptor's delight.
The same could certainly be said of this impressive lens
That helps, from shapless clay, to make aesthetic sense.
  • jimmyworldstar Feb 1, 2012 @ 4:05 pm | delete
I've never heard of polymer clay. The clay I'm used to is really malleable with water but once you let it dry or get into the hot sun it hardens quickly.
  • azD40x Jan 31, 2012 @ 12:31 am | delete
definitly going to try clay sculpting after reading your lens :)

Do you have any concerns that the Chinese manufacturers are not compling with the phthalates regulations? If so, would you recommend only purchasing from US / European manufacturers? Thanks
  • Noadi Nov 3, 2011 @ 2:49 pm | delete
I have no reason to believe they aren't complying. The major manufacturers of polymer clay (Sculpey, Fimo, Kato, Cernit) are all US or European based however.
  • Showpup Nov 2, 2011 @ 9:22 am | delete

I like sculpting, I never use polymer clay to make the sculpture before but I use the plasticine. The weakness with plasticine is that is cannot keep the shape for long, if it is accidentally pressed, there gone it shape. I like this lens very much!

I made an ornament out of Sculpey, baked it, and then sprayed it with Krylon. It made the ornament very sticky. 3 weeks later, it still hasnt lost the stickiness. What happened?
  • Noadi Aug 17, 2010 @ 12:08 am | delete
I'm not sure. Which spray did you use? Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic (and most of their other acrylic based sprays) should work fine over the clay. Did you use any paint under the krylon that might have reacted with it? Only other thing I can think of is maybe the clay wasn't cured enough or had some residue on it that might cause a problem.
  • Sue Aug 18, 2010 @ 8:36 am | delete
No other paint or finish before I sprayed wth the Krylon. I had baked it according to the directions. I did do some India Ink work on the front, but nothing on the back, and all 4 sides are sticky. Someone suggested putting it in a100 degree oven to see if it will harden. I guess I'll try that.

What a terrific lens. I discovered Polymer Clay from watching the Carol Duvall craft show on HGTV. I loved learning, bought many books to get the "how to's" and began making all kinds of things, decorating everything I found. This lens is a great addition to learning more about polymer clay. I introduced my grandchildren to polymer clay and, they love being creative and making different things to take home from Grandma's. Thanks for putting this lens together and, sharing it with the rest of the crafty people here on Squidoo!

I love working with Polymer clay, especially to make beads. Nice tutorial! I like the Fimo stuff the best. Unfortunately, my talent for actual sculpting is not up to par. I had friends in college who regularly made action figures with this stuff. I'll stick to my beads!

Thank you for this very informative lens. I can't wait to try the 90% alcohol tip -- does it work for smoothing out fingerprints in an unbaked clay project? I wear latex gloves when I can, but when I am doing fine work, they just get in the way. This has been my biggest frustration working with polymer clay. You can see pics of my clay wizards here:

Great resource, and contrats on the Purple Star. I've played a bit with clay, but didn't really go far. Maybe I'll pick it up again and have another try. Great idea about using a roasting bag. That's been one of my holdups -- worried about baking the clay in the oven I use for food, and certainly didn't have the ambition to clean the oven every time. LOL
  • theraggededge Apr 14, 2010 @ 3:52 am | delete

I just tried mixing SS with SS Firm, at about 75/25 ratio. The clay is sticking to my tools, specifically a Wilton gumpaste plastic tool that worked beautifully on regular SS. Will this stop if I get to a 50/50 mixture, is something wrong, or is this just the way it is?
  • Noadi Nov 14, 2009 @ 8:31 pm | delete
Is it sticking because the clay is too soft? If that's the case your SS is probably a very fresh sticky batch (each box of clay can vary, some are stickier than others) and adding more Firm will help. If it's sticking because the clay is too stiff and it's more friction than your tool can handle you'll need to add more SS.

It really shouldn't stick to tools but I'm not familiar with the one you're using. Smooth wood, steel, and silicone shouldn't stick unless the clay is very soft, other materials might especially if they aren't really smooth.

This is one of my all time favorite lenses. I used to play with Sculpey as a kid, mostly making snakes, eels, and beads. Than as I got older I started thinking of clay as "for babies" - you know the teenager that's too old for toys, attitude. =P Than last year I found your lenses here on Squidoo and it I started thinking about how much fun I had with Sculpey all those years ago, and how - 'hey, I could make money doing something I really love doing!' and next thing I knew I was buying up FIMO and Sculpey and making little Goddess Dolls and Tribal Dolls and Spirit Dolls and Faeries and Mermaids - and WOW once I got started I couldn't stop! LOL! Now a year later, I'm selling them online and making money doing something I love doing. It's great! I'm so glad you made this series of lenses otherwise I never would have gotten back into doll making. Thank you so much!

    (P.S. Angels blessing sent.)

I've never tried doing ball joints, from my understanding they are quite difficult. You might want to try to use soft wire for your joints instead, where you have a joint embed a length of wire with a loop on the end (so it won't pull out) leaving abut 1/4 inch between say the shoulder and arm to give it space to bed. 20-18 gauge aluminum wire works best (check hardware & craft stores it's pretty cheap). If you are working with a full body armature, just make sure it's soft wire like aluminum and leave 1/4 inch uncovered at the joints.

Google making joints for stop motion puppets, that's your best bet if you want a more complex type of joint.

i dont consider myself an artist, im just a mom of a 2 year old who loves crafts, right now im working on making a dollhouse. already made some furniture and want to start with the dolls (actually i wanna do little animal families similar to the "silvanian families" or "calico critters" ) instead of "people" and ive been looking all over the web to find some tips or tutorials about how to make then jointed arms and legs ... pls someone in this artsitic community be kind to this crafty littl momma and tell her how to solve this prblm!!! (im using cold porcelain, you know, made with starch glue and glicerine instead of polimer clay cause cause its cheaper and doesnt need baking... and im not a pro so i dont wanna spend that much on this project)

Holy mackerel!! I just now stumbled across this lens, and it's a marvelous resource! In fact, the sheer amount of information offered here is a little overwhelming. I use polymer clay to make ornaments and small containers with decoration inspired by the ceramic art of Neolithic Europe (I have a bit of a Sculpey bias; I guess I should try some of the other brands as well); but I'm certainly no professional at it. I'm more developed in folk music and photography; but making Neolithic-inspired ornaments is lots of fun. In any case, I should get plenty of good ideas from your content and tutorial links, once I have the chance to study them in more depth. Thanks for providing all this knowledge, and keep sculpting!!

WOW! I have been interested in doing polymer, thought this would be helpful (which it will be) but then I saw your work and well, WOW.

Great informational lens on polymer clays. Spent several years working with polymer clays for jewelry accessories. The polymers are great to work with, the references you list are instructional. Nothing like hands on with polymers!
    nice lens!

Very cool lens. You can make some cool things sculpting. I used to do it in high school. It was quite fun :) 5*

This is something that I think would be really fun. I think I could have an easier time with it than painting, maybe.

    FIVE BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED STARS!
    and cookies!

    Kathy's Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Cream together:
1 cup 'real' butter (not margarine!)
    1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 Tbl. black strap molasses
    1 tsp. salt
    add and blend two eggs
don't overdo this part or your cookies will turn out weird.

sift together then fold into sugar mixture:
2 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp. baking soda

add and mix to above mixture:
    1 cup coconut
    3/4 cup old fashioned oatmeal
    2 full cups chocolate chips

Bake at 325 degrees for about 12 minutes. Use only an old junkie cookie sheet... not one of the new ones, they tend to make these cookies cake. Take the cookies out 'just a hair BEFORE they are done'. Let them finish up after they come out of the oven.

what a great lens! I've made a couple of dolls and doll house items out of Sculpey and Fimo, several years ago, but that's about it. I'd like to take it up again, it was fun.

Really nice lens, congratulations on breaking into the Top 100 - I still have to make it that far...
  • johndilbeck Apr 20, 2008 @ 1:33 am | delete
    Hi Noadi,

I tried using Fimo to sculpt small roses to be cast in pewter and silver. It's not as easy as it looks! I think I'll have to stick with hot steel. I love watching people who are really good at sculpting. You have some great information and links here. All the best, JD.

I used to love clays when I was young, I still do but don't have time. There are really good sculptures who made a name for themselves.

    Great Lens Noadi,

I've been hoping someone would do a lens on this subject for a long time. I've done enough sculpture to know that this is a first rate resource.

    Thank you!

Oh my goodness.. I just saw your comment on my Wendy Froud lens... so sorry I did not get back. I would love to exchange lists or whatever.. I have never done that before. You would think that I would have, gads with over 100 lenses. That is more than I can keep track of I guess.. lol!
I LOVE this lens and all of your lenses really. Wonderful info. I used to do production pottery for a living and know regular clay really well (ug sometimes I will admit!) but I have not done much with Polymer. Your fine lens makes me want to though!
    Happy day to you, Kathy
