Sea Lions - Protected Species (The Sharks and Orca haven't gotten the message yet!)
Sea Lions are protected marine mammals (at least in the U.S.)--their main enemies (predators) are the sharks (in particular, the Great White Shark) and the orca (killer whales). For a while, their population declined greatly when they were hunted for their meat and skins by humans--but they have made somewhat of a come-back.A few years ago, you could go to Pier 39 at San Francisco's shoreline and see the place festooned with sea lions--all over the place..... hamming it up for the tourists. But then, recently, the population almost totally disappeared.... some are coming back, but it's still a mystery about where they went. And, it's also a mystery of whether they will be coming back. Stay tuned for more information as I get it.
