Finding & Collecting Rare Precious Beach Sea Glass

I have always been a collector of a number of things. Rocks, indian beads, fossils, marbles and obviously sea beach glass. I have collected sea or "beach" glass as I have known it here in Michigan--no sea is close but Lake Michigan is right near me!

I specifically enjoy the treasure hunter that comes out in me when I am scouring the shore for beach glass that has been rolling around for years and years in the ocean or one of the Great Lakes in Michigan.

I created this lens about beach glass to share this hobby with others and share some of the resources that I have found.

Enjoy!

Why use a black light to identify beach/ sea glass? Why do you need one?

A black light is used to look for "Vaseline" glass or pieces that are radioactive. Uranium dioxide crystals add a yellowish-green hue to the glass when used as a coloring agent. Very little glass was made this way and existing intact pieces are highly collectible.

I've found glass on the beach, but it was the kind that cuts your feet open and makes you angry! Nothing pretty like what you've got featured here.

When I was a kid I was always exited when I was finding these pretty "stones" (sea glass), but then my father would say "oh these are just old glass pieces, not real stones!", but still these were the prettiest to me. I had no idea some of these could be rare. They sure make nice necklaces and such. Next time I am at the beach I think I will go hunt for more sea glass

I would love to find sea glass and learned so much from you beyond what I knew. I live in North Dakota with no chance of finding any here. I have found some nice pieces of Lake Superior glass and enjoyed the hunt. I didn't know about the rare collectible glass. Fun and fascinating!

I love beach glass! Some of my favorite earrings are made from beach glass. I have never found beach glass myself although I have lots of shells. Do you really need sifters to find it?

I found some a few weeks ago just walking along the beach. It is just easier sometimes to have something to scoop it up with before the next wave takes it out. :-)
