Blast From The Past
I'm sure everyone remembers seeing this ad in the back of their comic books when they were a kid. Well, like a lot of kids, I gave into the alluring artwork depicting a family of smiling pot-bellied humanoid-like sea creatures and the text promising "instant pets". I sent off a dollar and twenty-five cents of my hard-earned allowance money (plus fifty cents for shipping) and began the waiting game. Six to eight weeks for delivery? Are you kidding me? To an eight-year-old kid, that may as well have been a lifetime! Then when the package finally arrived, you had to wait another 24 hours after mixing up the water before adding the eggs (Didn't they know that I had already been waiting 8 weeks??). Finally after 8 weeks and one day, I was ready to add Packet No. 2 "Instant Live Eggs". The moment of truth had finally arrived. And viola! Like magic hundreds of tiny little specs appeard and began swimming around the Mason jar I was using as a make-shift aquarium. From that point forward I was hooked on Sea Monkeys. The miracle of instant life!Fortunately, the mail-order days of the past are well behind us. With the automated order processing, handling, and shipping of today's online retailers, you no longer have to wait six to eight weeks for delivery of your Sea Monkeys kit. A week to ten days is more typical. But unfortunately you still have to wait 24 hours after mixing your water solution before hatching your eggs. Some things just can't be rushed....(sigh!).
What are Sea-Monkeys®?
Sea-Monkey is a brand name of a hybrid of Artemia salina, a species of brine shrimp. These are a type of fairy shrimp - not true shrimp, but a branchiopod.The Sea-Monkey hybrid of Artemia salina is called Artemia nyos. They were bred for their larger size and longer lifespan, making them more suitable as pets than the original breed of brine shrimp.

Raising Sea Monkeys: The Basics
First things first!So you've never raised Sea-Monkeys before?? Not to worry... It's easy! But before you can even start, you at need to at least obtain one of the many Sea-Monkey starter kits available. These can range from a basic 3 packet kit with no extras, to much more complete kits with plenty of accessories. Any kit can get you started, but for beginners, I would personally advise a kit that at least includes an aquarium.
Let's create INSTANT LIFE!
Once you have a kit, you will begin by measuring out 12 ounces of water. Tap water is ok to use, but you should first boil it and then let it cool. If you can, it's best to use a quality bottled water instead. Just be sure the water is at room temperature before proceeding to the next step.
Once you have measured the correct amount of water into the aquarium (or other container if you don't have one... such as a Mason jar or glass), locate the No.1 Water Purifier packet. Empty the entire contents of this packet into the water, then carefully stir the water for one minute, or until the powder is almost completely dissolved.
The next step requires just a bit of patience. Set the aquarium aside in a safe, well lit place where it will not be disturbed or knocked over. Let it remain there at room temperature for 24 to 30 hours. The Water Purifier needs this time to prepare the proper formula balance for the baby eggs to hatch and grow. After 24 to 30 hours have passed, it's time to locate the No.2 Instant Live Eggs packet. Can't you feel the suspense building?!?!?
It's time for that magical moment! Open Packet No.2 Instant Live Eggs and pour the entire contents into your aquarium of purified water. Now stir gently for about one minute so that the crystals begin to dissolve. The Sea-Monkey eggs will begin to hatch instantly, and you will actually see your newborn pets - ALIVE!
Sea-Monkeys are very tiny when first hatched, but grow many times larger in just a matter of days. If you're having trouble seeing them, try placing a strong light source behind the container. While the water is still swirling from your stirring, observe closely and you'll see what looks like tiny white dots swimming against the current. Those dots are your newly hatched Sea-Monkeys. Congratulations... you've just created INSTANT LIFE!

Sea Monkey Tips: Feeding
How soon after they're born should I feed my new pets? Those cute little newborn hatchlings... they just look so hungry don't they? You're thinking to yourself... "surely it wouldn't hurt if I fed them just a little". Don't do it! You must resist those motherly (or fatherly) instincts! Your newborn pets are just fine and have plenty of food available when first hatched. That packet of Instant Live Eggs you just poured in also contained enough food supply to feed your newborns for a number of days. Wait at least 5 days but no more than 7 days before feeding them for the first time... and when doing so, always use the small end of the feeding spoon.How often do I feed them? Feeding your Sea-Monkeys once a week usually works quite well. It really depends greatly on how many of your pets survive to adulthood after the first few weeks of life. Less than 16 adult Sea-Monkeys, and you may want to back off to once every 8 to 10 days. Pay close attention! If your Sea-Monkeys water begins to become cloudy, it's a sure sign that you're over-feeding them. If this is the case, stop feeding them until the water clears up. Also observe the bodies of your Sea-Monkeys. Healthy adult Sea-Monkeys will have a dark streak running the length of their bodies. This indicates that they are eating properly and have a full gut. If this is the case, once every 8 days is just fine... but always continue in your observations. Another factor is green algae growth. If you provide an adequate light source for your aquarium (with indirect daylight or a plant light), you'll benefit from the growth of green algae which provides both oxygen and a supplemental food source. Once again, be observant... if you notice a significant amount of green algae in the tank, consider feeding them once every 10 days. It's also a good idea to have a method for keeping track of their feeding schedule. You can use an inexpensive pocket calendar so you can jot down the feeding dates. You'll find this tip especially helpful... and even more so if you have multiple aquariums to keep track of.
What about other food suppliments? Remember, never attempt to feed your Sea Monkeys anything other than food that was intended for them. If you're interested in feeding your pets something different, a number of specially formulated supplements are available for your Sea-Monkeys. It's important to pay attention to the directions listed on the back of each of these packets and avoid over-feeding.

Sea Monkey Tips: Aeration
What is Aeration? Aeration (also called "oxygenating") is extremely important to the survival and happiness of your Sea-Monkeys. It simply means getting air into the water of your aquarium. This is vital in the first days of a newly hatched colony. Wait about 2 days after hatching before beginning aeration. Then continue every day afterwards for the next 7 days. Beyond the 7th day, you'll find that every other day usually works just fine. Some colonies may only need aerating twice a week. How do you know how often? It really calls for a bit of observation. If your Sea-Monkeys are darting around the tank in a lively fashion, then they're likely receiving plenty of oxygen. If they start swimming slowly and begin to get sluggish, then it's a possible sign that their oxygen supply is getting choked off. If this is the case, oxygenate their water everyday until they become lively again.How do I aerate properly? The primary methods for aerating are as follows: If your kit came with a Million Bubble Air Pump (or has a built in pump), this is the best way to aerate. A few pumps (about 15) and your pets get plenty of oxygen. Another method of aeration is to pour the water back and fourth 5 or 6 times from their tank to another container, but always finishing in the original tank. If you're uncomfortable with this, you can also try stirring their water with a plastic spoon for 2 to 3 minutes to move air from the surface to the bottom. For the advanced hobbyist, you can always purchase an aquarium air-pump, some hose, and an air-stone from your local pet or fish supply store (also check the pet isles of your local department store). The smallest pump you can find will do, but try and find one that can regulate the air flow. Some air-pumps have built in air flow adjustment and some don't. If you can't find one that does, you can purchase a regulator valve for the hose and control the air flow that way. The idea here is to have a light flow of bubbles coming from the air-stone, rather than creating a violent current that puts undue stress on your pets.
Always be careful. Remember, as careful as we all may be, there's still always the possibility of harming your fragile Sea-Monkeys whenever you insert anything into their aquarium. Your tiny pets stand little chance when getting caught between the wall of their tank and the air-stone of a Million Bubble Air-Pump (or Spoon, or whatever) as their bodies can be easily crushed. A good rule of thumb is to simply avoid the walls of their tank with any handheld item you're using for aeration. This is especially important for those of you using the stirring method for aeration, as it is easy to come in contact with the tank wall while doing so. Another issue to be careful with is cleanliness. If your tools of aeration are not clean, you run the risk of introducing contaminants into your water every time you use them. It's a good practice to thoroughly rinse these items (inside and out) with clean water (preferably distilled) after every use, and then dry with a clean paper towel. Allow them to dry completely and then consider storing them in a zip-lock baggie until needed again. Your Sea-Monkeys will personally thank you...by living longer!
Sea Monkey Tips: Environment
Water Quality. One of the most important keys to creating an optimum environment for your Sea-Monkeys, is to start off with pure water. It is highly recommended that you use a quality distilled water. If your distilled water is cold, let it first warm to room temperature before adding Packet #1 Water Purifier. If tap water is your only option, you'll need to boil it first to remove contaminants...and in this case, you'll need to make sure you let it cool to room temperature before adding Water Purifier.Water Temperature. The temperature of the water in your aquarium can have significant effect your colony. If the water is too hot or too cold, it can greatly diminish the number of hatchlings you get when starting a new colony. You should do your best to obtain a constant temperature between 70 and 76 degrees. To aid in this, you should invest in an inexpensive aquarium thermometer. Just go to your local department store's pet isle where the fish supplies are sold and you can likely find a good one for a couple of dollars. The small thermometers with a suction cup attached are nice as they provide a nice way to temporarily hook it on the edge of the aquarium. You can also purchase those flat self-adhesive ones that stick to the outside of your tank, but they are not as accurate and can give you false readings if you've got a close by light source such as plant light.
Location, Location, Location. Many Sea-Monkey owners can relay their sad stories about the day their aquarium got knocked over by a family member, a friend, or the family dog or cat. Some Sea-Monkey owners have even knocked it over themselves. Your best defense in avoiding this is to place your aquarium out of the reach of small children...and if you're the owner of a curious cat, you'll have to place it even higher. If pets or small children aren't an issue in your home, then your options are numerous... but you should still exercise caution when placing your Sea-Monkeys in a location such as an end table or coffee table. If you really want to play it safe, I suggest purchasing either the Mars Mania kit or the Magic Castle kit. Both of these kits have a wider than standard base and are actually difficult to tip...and because of snug fitting caps, even a determined cat will find it difficult to harm your aquatic pals.
Sea Monkey Tips: Cleaning
Do Not Use Soap. Yes... cleaning the above mentioned items is important... but do not use any soaps or detergents! An item washed with soap, even when thoroughly rinsed, can still have a small residue of soap left, and that's all it would take to harm your pets. Remember, soaps and detergents are formulated for humans, and even the smallest amount to us represents a lethally high chemical concentration for your Sea-Monkeys. It's a good practice to thoroughly rinse these items (inside and out) with clean water (preferably distilled) after every use, and then dry with a clean paper towel. Allow them to dry completely and then consider storing them in a zip-lock baggie until needed again.

- I had Sea Monkeys as a small child thirty-some-odd years ago. It gave me the aquarium bug.
I keep reef aquaria with live coral and have been known to breed clownfish, but you know, Sea Monkeys are still dang cool to me!
I'm now tempted to go out and buy some Sea Monkeys to add to my refugium.
Great lens, really brings back fond childhood memories.
