Ranked #8,426 in SEO, #234,107 overall

Why would you want to do this?

If you are marketing anything that requires one on one interaction or for you to establish trust with others you want to insure that your search engine reputation is impenetrable.

The best way to do this is for you to be in control of the first few pages of the Search Engine Result Pages when people search for your name.

I will show you how to use various free websites to get you started and show you some of the other service that I use which have a nominal cost.

This process is not an overnight activity it will take probably a good thirty days to get everything set up properly then you will be able to "maintain" your search engine presence in a few hours per month, unless you are like me and love creating content!

I started a blog named The SERM Experiment which is my daily diary of my personal Search Engine Reputation Management activities. Then again I am obsessive about making sure that you find me when you are looking for me..

Getting Started - Setting Up Your Profiles

Your profile pages is what will be found in most search engine result pages if they are properly optimized.

Here are some simple steps to make sure the search engines identify your profile with you.
  • Use Your Name -Always use your real name when creating your profiles. This is the term you are wanting to rank for make sure you use it!!
  • Use Your Own Photo - Sure pictures of your little kitten are cute and I know that your child is adorable, but you have to remember you are wanting others to connect to you so your main profile picture should always be a fairly current photo of yourself. Add the kids and pets in the picture uploads these various sites allow if you want. They are part of your personality but make sure you lead with you.
  • Add Your Feeds EVERYWHERE - Your personal blog feed should be added to any piece of content where you are increasing your online exposure if it is allowed. If not most do allow you to add a link to YOUR WEBSITE not that of your company. Remember you are wanting people to identify with you. You can use these same steps that I am outlining for your company as well and I encourage you to do so, but your first goal is you.

My Personal Blog which as of this writing ranks #1 in all of the Search Engines for Paul Rushing. Below is the feed...

User Generated Content Sites - UCG

UCG Sites allow you to create content on anything your heart desires. Some sites will allow you to monetize your efforts and others strictly prohibit monetization.

While your first goal is to lock down your Online Reputation it is always nice to make some change along the way. I personally make several thousand per month from various affiliate programs and UCG platforms in addition to the consulting and cars I sell using the Internet.

UCG Sites that Have Built in Monetization

UCG Sites will not be worth the effort unless you take the time to learn to make pages about things that interest you, and yes marketing your services can be a thing that interest you.

Each of the links below will take you directly to the sign up page for each of the services.
Squidoo.com
I make several hundred dollars per month right here at Squidoo not to mention the personal branding that I receive from it. I have more than one profile here and each one is very "niche targeted".
HubPages.com
HubPages community is very strong. Not only does it have the ability to help you with your search engine presence it will also allow you some great networking opportunities and income streams.

One thing you need to make sure of any content you create there must be absolutely "evergreen" or it will get deleted. Marketing messages are ok if they are a resource box. Think of HubPages as a place to do article marketing with you receiving compensation for the traffic too.

HubPages is your online space to share your advice, reviews, useful tips, opinions and insights with hundreds of other authors. HubPages is completely free, and you can even earn online ad revenue!

Blog, Blog, Blog and Blog some more.....

I listed blogger above because it has built in monetization via Adsense and you can also use affiliate networks with blogger as well. Some of these other FREE blogging platforms allow monetization while others specifically prohibit it.
Wordpress.com
wordpresslogoWordpress.com has some pretty strict TOS but they do rank very well in the search engines. I have a few blogs hosted at wordpress.com and I also use it as a platform for some of my other blogs, more on the differences later.

I suggest that if you use wordpress.com for part of your online reputation management that you use your name as the subdomain of the url you create.

You can see my wordpress.com blog titled "Paul Rushing on Wordpress"
Blogger Blogs aka Blogspot
Blogger Blogs allow any type of monetization possible. You can use blogger to create blogs about anything of interest to you and your profile will get indexed for your name if you use the tips given above.

All you need to get a free blogspot blog is a Google Account.

Think of it like this. People search for your name and find blogs that you author which you can use to get your personal message out.
My CC Blog

MyCCBlog is a free blogging platform based on wordpress where you can make a highly SEO optimized blog and not be tied down with the restrictive TOS that you will find at wordpress.com.

I really love MyCCBlog, click on the link and you will discover why. :P

Good lens! This is solid advice.

Online reputation management is an important task, as many people will go out and search your name before they decide to do business with you.

With the easy access to posting information these days, It's also important to know what is out there about you and your company. This information makes up who you are to potential clients & customers, so managing is more important now, than ever.
