Seahorses are one of nature's most unique and intriguing forms of marine life and are regarded fondly by individuals and interest groups of many cultures. These charismatic fish are threatened by over-exploitation, accidental capture and degradation of habitat. The seahorse is exploited for use as traditional medicines, tonic foods, curios/souvenirs, and as aquarium fish. Traditional Chinese Medicine is the largest direct market for seahorses, but they are also used in other traditional medicines. Almost all seahorses in aquariums are wild-caught while dead seahorses are made into jewelry, key chains, paperweights and other crafts. Consequently, many seahorse species are included on the IUCN (The World Conservation Union) Red List primarily as Vulnerable and Data Deficient. The Knysna seahorse from South Africa is formally recognized as Endangered.

Saving seahorses is vital to the preservation of our oceans. Seahorses serve as flagship species for a wide range of marine conservation issues. For more information visit our featured websites.

More on Seahorses

Seahorses are members of the family Syngnathidae, from the Greek words "syn" meaning together or fused, and "gnathus" meaning jaws. They share this family with fish like the pipefish. Seahorses alone make up the genus Hippocampus, from the Greek words "hippos" meaning horse and "campus" meaning sea monster.

Video of Pygmy Seahorses - Awesome!

Beautiful, rare video of Pygmy Seahorses

This video is well worth watching. I was in awe of the beauty and grace of these intriguing creatures.

Pygmy Seahorse

Pygmy seahorses greeting one another off Komodo Island. These creatures are only about 5-10mm in length, so finding and shooting them is quite difficult and requires specialized video equipment. Pygmy seahorses socialize with one another at certain times of the day and I happened to be there at the right time. I was alone shooting this video but had been to the same site twice earlier that day. Still, it took 25 minutes to find the site and another 20 minutes to find the animals. They are very hard to spot! It's very rare to see them free swimming and quite rare to catch four in the frame at one time. The width of the frame is about 50mm.

Help Protect Seahorses: What You Can Do!

Here's what you can do to aid seahorse conservation efforts

Beyond financially supporting seahorse conservation efforts, there are things you can do to help:
  • Don't buy dried seahorses in craft stores or at beach shops. They were actually live animals, killed simply to make decorative trinkets.
  • Don't keep seahorses in home aquariums. Seahorses have special water quality and food needs that only the most expert home aquarists can meet.
  • Take care to protect our local waters, many of which flow into the Gulf of Mexico. Recycle your motor oil and apply lawn fertilizer sparingly. These local actions can help safeguard seahorse habitats miles from where you live.
