The World Largest Sea Cave! The Sea Lion Caves
Some 25 million years ago on Highway 101? huh? exists the World's Largest Sea Cave and the home to the Sea Lion Caves.
Tucked underground in this cavern that lies 208 feet from the surface lives the shelter of the Stellar Seal Lion.
Sea Lion Caves
A really Big Ampitheater
In 1880 William Cox discovered the largest sea cave in the world.Formed over a process of 25 million years this caved is primarily composed of Basalt rock.
Measuring about the size of a 12 story building and the length of a football field guarantees its place as the largest sea cave in the world.
Stellar Sea Lions occupy the cave today as it was when William Cox discovered it.
Throughout the interpretive area are many displays and facts about the formation and habitation of the cave.
The original cave entrance was replaced with an elevator in 1961. The elevator descends 208 feet from the ground level to the sea cave floor.
Among the views besides the cavern and sea lions is the Heceta light house. A great photo opportunity awaits from the original entrance pictured right.
Don't forget the other spectacular fauna in the area.
Take a look at the Cormorants & Pigeon Guillemot to Orcas & the Gray Whale!

- I loved the sea lion caves when we visited. It was difficult to take a picture, since they didn't allow a flash--it's very dark down there. Bring a video camera if you can. Nice work! Lensrolled you onto our northern route road trip lens.
