All My SAR Stuff In One Place

The more I participate in Search and Rescue, the more I enjoy it, the more I learn, the more satisfying it is, and the more I read and write about it.

So I thought I'd gather all of my SAR articles (called "lenses" here on Squidoo, because they focus on a particular subject), SAR websites, and SAR blogs in one place. Not only will it help me keep track of what I've put out there but also give readers a chance to look through the contents and decide where to go next.

What Search & Rescue Is All About

And how you can participate in SAR

In this article, I explain what SAR involves, the different types of Search & Rescue teams, and the skills one needs to participate, particularly in Wilderness SAR. Also included are rescue videos, some of my favorite SAR books, and links to interesting Search & Rescue news stories.

The Rock Rescue Academy

Training for technical rescue

technical rescueAfter being with Coconino County Sheriff's Search & Rescue for a year and a half and participating in dozens of missions, I decided to train for the technical rescue team, a sub-set of our general "ground-pounding" SAR unit. The initial, basic tech training took place in a series of classroom and field sessions collectively known as the Rock Rescue Academy.

These are pages I put together about some of the skills new technical team recruits learned in preparation for the proficiency test....

Ropes That Rescue: Intensive Technical Rescue Classes

In February, 2010, I took a weeklong class outside of my own Search and Rescue team, learning the art of rigging high-angle rescue systems, the physics behind mechanical advantage systems and high directionals, multiple uses of the Aztek kit, and more.

In November, 2010, I returned to Ropes That Rescue for a second class, this one focusing no the use of the "artificial high directional" called the Arizona Vortex.

Here are some photos from the courses....

A 24-Hour Pack For SAR

a.k.a. The SARpack

All volunteers on our team -- and all other SAR teams that I'm aware of -- are required to carry what's known as a 24-hour pack on missions. That is, it's a backpack full of enough gear, clothing, food and water to be self-sufficient for 24 hours in the field. So I took the things that I carry and turned some of that gear into a package that can be purchased as a kit, or you might pick and choose from individual items. Or simply use it as a guide for putting together a 24-hour pack of your own, including all of the 10 essentials.

This is a lens explaining what's in the SARpack with links to each item.

SAR-Related Reading

My book reviews

Not only do I DO SAR and write about SAR, but I read about it as well. I really enjoy true stories about rescuers and those they rescue, and firsthand accounts of wilderness survival, but I also like a SAR-related novel now and again. And when I read about SAR, I tend to write about what I read.

So here are some of those books and what I thought about them.

A GPS How-To Series

Most SAR professionals, paid or volunteer, use GPS devices in their work. They're useful for marking the location of evidence, making a track of the area that's been searched, navigating our way to certain landmarks, and so much more. Here, I've written a series of articles about GPS basics with links to additional reading material and handheld units popular with my own teammates.

Articles About Hiker Safety And Gear

Given that I've participated in many SAR missions that wouldn't have happened in the first place had those we searched for and rescued either made a different decision or carried just a few simple items in a small pack when they started out.
