One of the most frustrating aspects of developing a website is keyword generation!

Despite all of the technology, keyword generation is both an "art" and a science.

At the same time, if you own a website, use Google Adsense or Google Adwords, you know that selecting the right combinations of relevant keywords/keyword phrases is essential to getting ranked high in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN for your search terms.

All of these tools will provide you with data that helps you to measure search engine volume for various keywords and keyword combinations as well as suggesting keyword combinations, either broad or exact based on your niche.

You can develop short tail and long tail keywords using these tools. I use them all and others to generate my lists of keywords.

Tools like Compete.com and SEODigger even allow you to find out what keywords your competition is using which is a huge benefit when developing a marketing campaing or just attempting to improve traffic to your site.

Here's the problem. They are just tools. Unless you know how to use they will be of little help.

Just like owning a hammer, doesn't make you a carpenter; purchasing keyword software mean you'll achieve great SEO results.

You just end up generating lists of terms and plugging away to see what works.

As a website designer, I see this all the time when clients come to me and want me to redesign their websites. When I look at the sites source code, it becomes apparent that no attempt at basic SEO was ever made. This is because most website designers are not SEO people. They're design people.
